Miami Section of IEEE Section Report to the Florida Council and Region 3 Spring Meetings March 30-April 1, 2001 Clemson, SC All section reports for the 2000 (officer's report, financial report and activities reports) were submitted to headquarters on time. The section holds monthly EXCOM meetings during which, we discuss current and planned section/chapter activities. We are in need of volunteers and we need help in recruiting them (any ideas will be appreciated). We are looking for EM Chapter chair and we are hopeful that we will be able to fill this position soon. We have had several good activities and good news to report in the past few months: a. The section has awarded several deserving members awards for outstanding engineer (Mr. Hassan Younes), outstanding educator (Dr. Malcolm Heimer), outstanding service (Dr. Moez Tapia) and long life achievement (Dr. Tazy Young) awards during the annual awards banquet last November. b. Dr. Nand Tripathi Won the PES outstanding PES Engineer Award from the Power Engineering Society. c. The PES chapter won the high performing chapter award by IEEE PES and a check for $1000.00 d. The Communication Society chapter also won a high performing chapter award and a check for $500.00. e. We have conducted several technical, social and professional activities during the Engineers Week this year in collaboration with other engineering societies. f. Society chapters in the section are conducting good technical activities and field trips and inviting outside speakers. g. The students branches are conducting good activities and membership drives and are seeing moderate increase in student membership at local universities. h. IEEE President will visit the Miami Section on April 9, 2001 for a lunchtime lecture and interaction with section membership and students. i. The Miami Section Web site is now up and running at https://ieee.aln.fiu.edu/ The section participated in community service through its participation with the diversity program at FIU and was able to help obtain a continuation on the Geer-UP grant from the US Department of Education. The Geer-UP project is focused at enhancing and following the education of young minds and encouraging students to choose and learn more about careers in Math, Science and Engineering. The program is being implemented at two Homestead-area Junior High Schools. We are also assisting in similar programs to assist young students in other Miami geographical areas and will report on that soon. The section will continue its participation in more activities that will enhance the electrical and computer engineering profession as well as activities that involve the community, students and deal with issues of concern to the membership.
