Area 6 Report: Fall 2001 Lowell Brothers The Alabama Section chaired by Greg Vaughn is having an excellent year with some outstanding programs on interesting topics such as "Are Cell Phones Safe", "Intelligent Vehicles", "Supercapacitors", "Planetary Exploration", and "Engineering Ethics". The Section has completed a strong Long Range Plan for 2002-2007 which addresses the section's strengths, opportunities and weaknesses and provides a road map to insure the section meets the needs of the members while growing the section and supporting Region 3 and the IEEE at the same time. One of the key components of the plan is to host the Spring 2002 Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel on May 4-9, 2002. This conference will provide attendees the opportunity to hear and see technical papers and posters, tutorials and exhibits that represent technical inn0ovation and applications associated with an ever-expanding mobile wireless industry. The section is also having regular technical society meetings in the areas of Industry Applications, Communications, and Power. The Huntsville Section chaired by Eric Grigorian started a Joint Communication/APS/MTT Society with anticipated monthly meetings for the rest of the year. The Section is actively engaged in preparation for the 2002 AUTOTESTCON which will be held in October 2002 in Huntsville. The Section also will be sponsoring a Conference on Advances of Signal Processing for Military Applications in October of 2002. The Section also approved submitting a proposal to AES for hosting 2003 RADARCON in May of 2003 in Huntsville. The Mobile Section, chaired by Marie Prosser, has been on summer break but does plan three more meetings for the year. The meeting for December may be a joint meeting with the Mobile Chapter of the Alabama Society of Professional Engineers to talk about the current state of ABET. No reports available from the Mississippi Section or the Montgomery Subsection. If any are received later they will be forwarded.
