PAOC report for Oct 2001 meeting PAOC: Professional Activities Operations Committee recommends policies and implements programs specifically intended to serve and benefit the members, the profession, and the public in the United States in appropriate professional areas of economic, ethical, legislative, social and technology policy concern. We follow the direction of the members, the Region 3 Excom, and IEEE-USA to implement policies and programs. CARE: The CARE Project is a new IEEE-USA initiative to recruit IEEE volunteers as grassroots activists for the purposes of building relationships between engineers and Members of Congress and raising Congressional awareness and appreciation of science and technology. Our goal is to have IEEE U.S. members pay a constituent visit on every U.S. Senator and Representative in their District office sometime during the 107th Congress (2001-2002). The project also encourages a wide variety of interactions in addition to traditional visits, such as congressional involvement in National Engineers Week, participation in tours and demonstrations, and member involvement in local Town Hall meetings, etc. George McClure's education at SEC01: George McClure provided an excellent team of teachers to train PACE leaders that attended Southeastcon 2001. One of George's new techniques included how to plan, organize, and operate meetings. George provided our PACE leaders with the tools to improve the effectiveness of their local efforts. PACE Programs for 2002: PACE leaders should be planning their meetings and activities for the remainder of 2001 and for 2002. New PACE leaders can find their past counterpart for information and planning. Experienced PACE leaders should have a good plan ready for next year. Section PACE Leaders: Most sections have a PACE leader. However, if your section is one of the few without a PACE leader, please search for someone to act in your behalf. I will be calling on these few sections to install a PACE leader. National Engineer Week 2002: All sections should take this opportunity to interact with the public during the 2002. This event spans the third week of Feb 2002. Visit the web site; find new ways to interact with the public; visit a school. Science Fair 2002: The International Science Fair will be held in Region 3 during May 2002 in Louisville. Now is the time to visit schools and notify teachers about the contests that will lead to the finals in Louisville in 2002. This is an excellent way for engineers to meet students, teachers, and parents. I wish to thank Dick Riddle for his guidance over the past 2 years. We look forward to working closely with Jim Howard and Dick to professionally benefit more members under whatever new IEEE structure may arrive next year. I would like to thank all my committee for their efforts and guidance. Sincerely, Don Hill PAOC Chair 2001
