IEEE Region 3 Public Information Report October 15, 2001 The Public Information Committee has been created to support the needs of Region 3 during 2001. Since the last report, the following activities have been completed, Several Region 3 articles have been published at the national IEEE level through our Professional Activities channels. In April, the IEEE-USA Workshop was held in Tampa. During that workshop, a number of Region 3 members had the chance to meet and network with IEEE members from across the US and the rest of the world. The SC Council of IEEE requested that we help them develop a new web page that would make it easier to organize and share information with its members and the public that visit the page. The PI organization took this request as a challenge to create a information portal that would be useful not only in conveying information but become a weekly gathering point for all SC based IEEE members. The design borrowed elements from other portals that give the visitor a quick means to check on information or find other information that is relevant to the entity that the portal represents. The final design can be found at, https://www.ewh.ieee.org/r3/south_carolina_council/ Please note that the site brings together a mapped approach to IEEE at the council, region, national and international level. The site also gives access to the best of other EE sites that promote careers and the profession. Add real time news, stocks, weather and sports and we hope that we have created a site that members will visit over and over. Please let me know if you know of other EE or technology sites that should be linked from the new site. Also please let me know your comments about overall site content and layout. My hope is that this site can be a reference that can be used to improve all of the Region 3 sites and their communications to the membership and to the public. Public Information is not just about web sites and real time news feeds. It's about using our words to inform the world about what we do and how it impacts the lives of all of us. I need all of us to take the time to write about our meetings, our members and the special projects that all sections do. Those articles can be posted locally and shared with other IEEE publications. If you would like to try your hand at writing, please visit the PI web page at, https://www.ewh.ieee.org/reg/3/publicinfo/ This page contains a number of reference sites that can answer your questions and hopefully get you started. We also have a PI discussion forum. This site is interactive and can be found at, https://r3-collab.eng.uab.edu/cgi-bin/dnewsweb?cmd=xover&group=ieee.r3pubinf&from=&utag=&sub=y We continue to distribute copies of the R3 Communications CD. This CD contains a number of IEEE-USA, R3 and PACE documents as well as shareware programs that are necessary in setting up a communications program. As before, the R3 Public Information Committee is a part of the R3 Communications Committee. Our involvement in the overall communications effort of R3 will ensure that our programs and message will be integrated and consistent. If you've got news about EE's in Region 3, please let me help you tell the rest of the world. Thanks, Lee Stogner R3 Public Information Chair l.stogner@ieee.org
