IEEE REGION 3 AREA 9 REPORT TO REGION 3 EXCOM JANUARY, 2002 Officers for the Jamaica Section for 2002 are as follows: Chair - Devon Gayle Vice-chair - Owen Clashing Secretary - Mervin Curtis Treasurer - Amlin Forrest The Section experienced an extremely successful year. Both Excom and general meetings were held each month. At each general meeting a presenter was invited to update/educate members. The outgoing Area 9 Chair Wilfred Roberts and the Jamaica Section executive were commended for their hard work and dedication. They received plaques to recognize their contribution. Companies that provided financial contribution for the staging of Forum 2001 on cellular communication were also recognized. The student chapter at the University of Technology, Jamaica remains extremely vibrant. Students are highly motivated and remain committed to the objectives of the IEEE. They are currently making preparations to enter all student competitions at SoutheastCon 2002 and for hosting these competitions at SoutheastCon 2003. The Section donated a perpetual trophy to be awarded to the most outstanding student in the faculty engineering and computing at the University of Technology, Jamaica. The Section has also agreed to sponsor the winning student to membership in the IEEE. Plans are afoot to establish another student chapter at the University of the West Indies. The Comsoc Society Chapter of the IEEE Jamaica Section has continued to organize interesting presentations in the area of communication. The 2001 executive has been re-elected to serve for 2002. (Chair - Dennis Hartley, Vice-chair - Winston Smith, Secretary - Winston Browning, Treasurer - Amlin Forrest). A Distinguished Lecture Tour was organized for October 2001 but will be rescheduled because of the September 11th terrorist attack on the United States. The Jamaica Section in association with the University of Technology, Jamaica is currently making plans to host SoutheastCon 2003 in April 2003. The Section is assiduously seeking sponsorship and making plans to host a successful conference. Goals for 2002 include the following: Increasing membership attendance and participation in meetings. Current meetings are very well attended but primarily by visitors and student members. Present more diversified technical presentations. Most currently focus on communications and computer related topics.
