IEEE Region 3 Public Information Report January 16, 2002 I have recently been appointed as Public Information Officer (PIO) for IEEE Region 3. I recently received the report as submitted by the past PIO; Lee Stogner dated October 15, 2001. Lee has done an excellent job regarding this important initiative, and I'd like to continue this effort to reflect the needs of Region 3. I'll be glad to forward this report, as submitted by Lee on October 15, electronically to those desiring more detailed information. As a first effort in my new job, I'd like to focus on several basic areas relating to Region 3 and Section support. I'd like to have a process in place to promote electrical engineering starting at the grade school level. Perhaps one way is to get the sections even more involved in participating in science fairs, distributing IEEE materials at schools and speaking to students. I realize this is already being done by some sections, but I'd like to see an increase in these activities. IEEE Headquarters has materials available for this purpose. Encouraging Sections to prepare a simple portable display regarding their activities along with local activities and supplemented with Headquarter's materials would be a start. Another way is to prepare a package of basic materials for Sections to use in supporting and promoting their activities. This would include a "Press Release" document that could be used as a guide to announce upcoming section meetings and special activities to the media. A simple announcement poster with IEEE logo and promo material with a "block space" for a section to insert (write in) their meeting announment and program for use on bulletin boards would be nice to use on bulletin boards at companies, libraries, etc. Sending invitations to non-IEEE members and students to attend Section meetings would be a means for getting the word out about IEEE. Still another is to work more with Sections to develop local Web Sites to promote their activities. These are just a few ideas. I encourage your input and ideas. Thank you.
