To: Region 3 ExCom Region 3 Committee From: Dick Riddle, Region 3 Past Director (00-01) Subject: Past Director Report 3-29-02 In addition to my duties as Region 3 Past Director (00-01) my activities at the Region level involve serving as the Chair of the Nominations & Appointments Committee, Southcon Representative, Vice Chair Strategic Planning Committee, and Communications Committee, Mentor. Who said Old Directors never die they just pass on to other duties? NOMINATIONS & APPOINTMENTS A call for nominations for Region 3 Delegate/Director-Elect (2004-2005) was sent to Region 3 ExCom and Section Chairs on February 4, 2002. The response was not overwhelming but we did receive some nominations. The N&A Committee will be meeting at SoutheastCon 2002 in Columbia, SC to review the qualifications of those nominees submitted and make our recommendations to the ExCom. On March 14, 2002, a call for nominations was sent to the Region 3 ExCom and Section Chairs for: Regional Activities Board (RAB) Treasurer; Vice Chairs of Member Activities; Region, Section and Chapter Activities; Strategic Planning; and Student Activities. The deadline for these nominations is Monday, June 17, 2002. As of this date, I have not received any nominations. SOUTHCON REPRESENTATIVE I attended Southcon 2002, January 16-17, 2002 at the Orange County Convention Center. Orlando, FL. While at Southcon 2002, I attended the Southcon Board meeting as one of Region 3's Board members. My impression of the conference was that it was a successful comeback for the show considering the its absence in 2000 and the late start that the show producers Electronic Conventions Inc. (ECI) had in marketing the conference. The conference was well attended more the 2,300 showed up. Feedback from most of the exhibitors was positive in spite of the less than expected number of booths that were sold. Most of the Board meeting was involved in attempting to reach an agreement on the plans for Southcon 2003. The meeting was adjourned without an agreement on Southcon 2003. About mid February the Southcon Board reached an agreement with ECI to hold Southcon 2003 on March 19-20, 2003 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, FL. In my opinion ECI seems to be doing a good job of marketing and PR in preparation for this conference. Jim Beall and I will be meeting with the Southcon Board on April 2, 2002. Following that meeting Jim and I will report on the status of Southcon 2003 as of that date. For additional information see the Southcon 2003 web page at URL: https://www.southcon.org/ VICE CHAIR STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE I will be meeting with the Strategic Planning Committee at SoutheastCon 2002. Under the able leadership of our Chair Bob Duggan the SPC continues to make a vital contribution to the operation and well being of our Region. For an indication of what the SPC does and how it does it I invite you to look at the SPC web page at URL: https://www.ewh.ieee.org/reg/3/spc/ I will be particularly interested in hearing the reports from our Committee Mentors. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE, MENTOR I am happy to report that Communications Committee is doing an excellent job of "serving the needs of the members and volunteers in Region 3 and the Institute." Bill Ratcliff and his committee have planned an exciting agenda to be presented at SoutheastCon. I urge all of you to attend this session. I feel that it should be a rewarding experience for those volunteer leaders who are faced with the challenges of communicating with your varied constituencies. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard L.
