IEEE Savannah Section Region 3 Report March 27, 2002 Section Chair: Joe Buxton Vice Chair: Charles Cobb Secretary/Treasurer: Joy Reed We recently held an election, and have a new Section Chair, Secretary/Treasurer, and Vice Chair. New officer appointments are: Program Chair and two Education Chairs (coastal Georgia and Beaufort/Jasper SC). All other appointed officers have agreed to serve another year. The Education Chair (SC) supplied judges for the Sea Island Science Fair, March 21, 2002, and selected recipients for IEEE Savannah Section Awards, from a group of outstanding contestants. The First Place winner will give a presentation to our Section, at our annual Awards meeting in June. All awards will be presented at that time. In May, we will be hosting the Industrial & Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference 2002. A lot of hard work has gone into planning this conference, and it looks to be a great success. It can be viewed at: https://www.ewh.ieee.org/r3/savannah/icps2002 Recent tours include the River Street Power Plant (put in operation in 1911), a Hargray Switching Office, and the Elba Island, Southern LNG facility, recently re-commissioned. The power plant is like a museum, but can still be operated, in an emergency. Recent presentation topics include Pocket PCs, Armstrong Atlantic's Computer Science activities, and Saber Technologies Internet Marketing Service. For various reasons, in the past two years we have lost several senior members. We have been fortunate to attract several new members, that are now active in the Section, but the senior members are certainly missed. One of our top priorities this year is more inter-action with teachers and students, both at the high school and university levels. The Section excom will use e-conferencing. Last year, we had a joint meeting with the Macon Section, at the Allen-Bradley manufacturing facility in Dublin, GA. The student participation was very good, both from Georgia Southern, and from Mercer. We would like to do something similar, perhaps this fall.
