2002 Director-Elect Mid-year Report

My Director-Elect activities this year included attending the IEEE
Regional Activities Board (RAB) meetings held in conjunction with the
IEEE Board of Directors meetings in February and June.  I serve on the
Rejuvenation Subcommittee of the Section & Chapter Support Committee
and I serve on the RAB Industry Relations Committee.  I also Chair the
Region 3 Corporate Communications Ad Hoc Committee.

2002 Region 3 Section Survey

Twenty-three persons responded to the 2002 Region 3 Section Survey
provided by Director Jim Howard earlier in the year.  It is not too
late to provide your section's input to Region 3 leaders on your
operations, problems and ideas for improvement.  If your section has
not yet responded, please fill out the survey at

Attached is a summary of the Section Survey data collected to date.
Let me know if you have comments on the statistics, or if you see
corrections I should make.

Rejuvenation Subcommittee of the Section & Chapter Support Committee

This committee helps the recovery of Sections, Subsections and
Chapters that have become inactive or appear to have become inactive
as a result of reports not being received from them.  Members of the
Rejuvenation subcommittee attempt to find out about the situation that
has led to the apparent inactivity, and to find ways of reactivating
the entity if possible.  The Rejuvenation Subcommittee is working and
making good progress with several Region 3 Sections, Subsections and
Chapters.


Ad Hoc Committee of the Region 3 Strategic Planning Committee

As Director-Elect, I have been asked to chair an ad hoc committee of
the Region 3 Strategic Planning Committee.  We are looking at possible
inconsistencies between the roles of, and voting by, Standing and Ad
Hoc Committees (and the chairs) in the R3 ExCom and the R3 Committee.
We are also concerned about the differences between Standing
Committees and Ad Hoc Committees, the allowed numbers of each (and who
can vote).

Recommendations will be brought to SPC (and then to ExCom) for
clarifying the Region 3 policy, and thus for future revisions to the
Bylaws and Operations Manual.  We are not yet ready to report out.
