To: Region 3 Executive Committee From: J. Patrick Donohoe, Region 3 Educational Activities Chair Subject: Educational Activities Mid-year Report Date: 12 September 2002 Early this year, the Region 3 Educational Activities Committee developed the following goals for 2002: (1) Increase the utilization of the Region 3 Lending Library materials by members of Region 3 (over the years, the utilization of the Lending Library has been very light) (2) Develop ways for the Educational Activities Committee to provide enhanced support to Region 3 members in continuting education, especially in the area of professional development hours for PE license renewal, and (3) Ensure that companies in Region 3 are nominated for the Employer Professional Development Award in 2002. In discussions with other Educational Activities Chairs in other regions, we have found that those who have tried to operate a regional lending library have experienced the same problem that Region 3 has with regard to under utilization by the Region members. As a result, these regions have chosen to eliminate their lending libraries. Based on this information and other information we have collected, the Educational Activities Committee is considering the elimination of the lending library and replacing it with all web-based material. We are currently in the process of evaluating how the "Region 3 Web Library" could be used to best serve the needs of Region 3 members. The Educational Activities Committee is also gathering web-based resources regarding activities that can be used to earn professional development hours for PE license renewal. These resourses will be incorporated into the Region 3 webpage and could eventually become part of the Region 3 Web Libary, if instituted by the Region. The Educational Activities Committee is currently working to identify employers in Region 3 to be nominated for the Region 3 Employer Professional Development Award. Please contact Region 3 EA Vice Chair Mark Tew (marktew@ieee.org) or myself if you know of an employer deserving of this award. The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2002.
