Report IEEE Region 3 Leadership Development Chair I continue my goals and vision begun in 2002, repeated below. There is a lot of work to be done in leadership development in Region 3. 2003 brings a new group of section, area, council, and region volunteer leaders that need the training and resources to succeed and continue to lead the IEEE into the 21st century. We need to take advantage of the technologies and expertise available to us, but at the same time remember the person-to-person contact that is crucial to leadership and fostering new leaders. With this in mind, we need to set our direction. Vision: My vision is of a Region 3 that is recognized as a outstanding source for successful, knowledgeable, and effective leaders in not only the Institute but throughout the electrotechnology industry. Mission: My mission is to provide the resources, network, and actions to provide knowledge, tools, and leadership growth to leaders at all levels of organizational units within Region 3. In light of the above, I have the following G&O: Goals 1. Provide "ABCs" training in IEEE administration to: A. Section officers and committee chairs B. Council officers and committee chairs C. Excom (including vice chairs) 2. Develop and provide leadership and professional development training at all levels A. Leadership skills B. Professional development (dealing with personalities, etc) C. Strategic / tactical planning and operations D. Project planning and management 3. Develop and provide specialized training as needed (in conjunction with other committees as needed) A. How to plan, bid and hold a successful SoutheastCon B. Electronic communications C. Others? To carry out these goals, I plan to: 1. Build a Leadership Development Committee with representation from all Area/Councils 2. Recruit a Vice Chair for the Leadership Development Committee 3. Recruit trainers in most (if not all) Areas/Councils 4. Develop and hold a train-the-trainer workshop for the trainers 5. Work with RAB and other resources to develop and post resources to the R3 web 6. Plan and carry out at least two leadership development workshops / retreats in R3 Councils 7. Work with the other R3 committees to develop and carry out specialized training as needed. These are ambitious goals, but Region 3 must be dedicated to the development of knowledgeable and effective leaders on all levels. Part of that dedication will need to be in the funding for this committee. The other part will need to be the support of time and resources, particularly at the Area / Council level, to help establish an effective training network.
