Atlanta Section Report 2 April 2003 Summary - The Atlanta Section is large (including more that 4500 members plus 1000 student members) geographically distributed (encompassing most of northern Georgia) and technically diverse (with several active society chapters). 2003 Atlanta Section ExCom - Chair: Andy Peterson (chair@ieee-atlanta.org) Vice-Chair: Bill Marshall (vicechair@ieee-atlanta.org) Treasurer: Wei Zhao (treasurer@ieee-atlanta.org) Secretary: David Millard (secretary@ieee-atlanta.org) +11 directors There are 10 active or rejuvenating society chapters in the Atlanta Section - Joint SP/COM Joint AP/MTT EM Comp Joint IM/EMC Joint AES/GRS CPMT PE VT IA Many of these chapters meet monthly, and most are entirely self-maintained without active section-level involvement. There are 6 student branches (4 very active) - Georgia Tech Southern Poly Clark Atlanta Chattahoochee Tech Dekalb Tech DeVry 2003 Goals and Accomplishments to date - 1) Created an industry relations program and selected a program director for the initiative; 2 corporate outreach events to date. 2) Starting a GOLD program and selected a program director for the initiative. 3) Pursuing a pre-college (a.k.a. K-12) education program. Planning meeting expected in April; several enthusiastic volunteers getting involved. 4) Hosted Director of IEEE History Center for 2003 banquet; very successful. 5) Discovered at banquet that 2004 is the centennial year for the Atlanta Section. Will pursue planning for celebrating the milestone. 6) Will continue to build volunteer pool for section-level activities. 7) Will pursue increased communication between Atlanta Section and Region 3.
