From: UTEngineer@aol.com Date: Tue Apr 1, 2003 3:15:54 PM US/Central To: r3-excom2003@ieee.org, sec-r03@ieee.org, d.green@ieee.org Subject: FWD: Gainesville Section Report Gainesville Section 2002 Report The Gainesville Section was re-invigorated in 2002 after a period of dormancy.Ê The Section officers for 2002 were: Dr. Glenn Heitman, Chair Dr. Yuguang Fang, Vice-Chair Dr. Eric Schwartz, Treasurer Dr. John Shea, Secretary Dr. Erik Larsson, Communications Director Elections were held in December 2002, and the same officers were re-elected for the year 2003. At present, the Section has 571 active members in 14 counties in Florida, centered on Gainesville and the University of Florida.Ê Of these, 232 are student members, mainly at the University of Florida. During 2002 the Section held several meetings, in accordance with IEEE Bylaws.Ê Apart from Executive Committee meetings, the following technical/social meetings were held: ¥Ê Ê 12 MarchÊ Section meeting with guest speaker Dr. Lei Wei Topic: Iterative Viterbi Algorithm (IVA): A Turbo Decoding Method for Conventional Serial Concatenated Codes ¥Ê Ê 15 MayÊ Section meeting with guest speaker Dr. Yu Hen Hu Topic: Energy Based Target Localization in a Wireless Ad Hoc Sensor Network ¥Ê Ê 13 NovemberÊ Section meeting: tour of the Kelly power plant of Gainesville Regional Utilities ¥Ê Ê 11 DecemberÊ Joint social meeting: Gainesville Section and UF Student Branch pizza party We also had an Executive Committee meeting with the Section officers and officers of the UF Student Branch to discuss interaction between the two entities and Section support for the Student Branch.Ê Tom Bullock and Eric Schwartz, advisors for our student branch, have been working closely with the students throughout the year.Ê The UF Student Branch has meetings monthly, always with a guest speaker.Ê Tom and Eric are generally in attendance at these meetings as the section representatives and to see how the section can aid the UF Student Branch.Ê We are partially funding the students and their entry into this year's SouthEastCon hardware competition.Ê Last year's student team won first prize in the hardware competition. The primary goal for 2003 is to continue the Section's meeting activity with a view to increasing the participation of the members in Section in meetings and elections.Ê We need to offer technical meetings, plant tours, and social meetings that will attract the members.
