VIRGINIA COUNCIL REPORT TO REGION 3 EXCOMM November, 2003 Virginia's eastern sections were hit hard by Hurricane Isabel, causing section meetings in Hampton and Richmond to be cancelled, and the planned Leadership Training session to be postponed. Many of our members were directly affected, including Adeeb Hamzey, Council Vice-chair and Richmond Section Chair, who is still riding the trouble truck in hard hat and boots for Dominion Power, helping restore service outages all over the state. He will represent the Council at the R3 meeting in Atlanta. Plans to host a future Southeastcon are still on hold. Virginia Mountain, luckily was spared the brunt of the storm. Short power outages and spontaneous week-end visitors from eastern friends and relatives were the only effects. Two Section meetings and a Chapter meeting were held: * Sept - Dr. George Lester on Gasoline/Electric Hybrid Vehicles * Oct - tour of WDBJ digital broadcast TV station * Oct - Computer/Control/IES Chapter meeting at Virginia Tech, Jason Lockhart, director of High Performance Computing, on "Big Mac", Tech's new super-computer built from 1100 Macintosh G5's. * Nov - Tim Cribs, GE Industrial Systems, will talk on GE Wind projects. Virginia Mountain also established an award in honor of the late Dan Jackson: an annual prize to be given at the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair for high school and middle school children. The Virginia Council also donated $100 to Good Samaritan Hospice in Dan's name. David H. Geer, P.E. IEEE Virginia Council Chair
