From: Bill Harrison To: R3 ExCom and Region 3 Committee - November 2003 Subject: Region 3 Director-Elect's Report 2004 Region 3 ExCom I have worked closely over the past several months with Jim Howard, R3 Director, and Dick Riddle, Chair of the Nominations & Appointments Committee, to organize the 2004 Executive Committee. The 2004 ExCom is presented in the N&A Committee report. We have lots of continuity, some new people, and some shifts in responsibility. Please review the appointments and let Dick or me know if you have any questions, concerns, issues with the proposed ExCom organization. We plan to present the 2004 ExCom for endorsement at the Region 3 Meeting November 22nd. 2004 Initiatives and Projects Working with the Strategic Planning Committee, N&A Committee, and members of the current ExCom, we have developed a list of proposed 2004, and beyond, initiatives and projects. We will be looking for feedback, input, ideas and volunteers from the Region. Initiatives and projects include: Strategic Planning: Align Region 3 planning with that of IEEE, IEEE-USA, & RAB Objectives. Major Initiatives: Leadership Development - Encourage training of future leaders as mentors through a program called Leadership by Developing Others (LDO). Public Information - Promote professional image of engineers and the IEEE with industry and the community. Industry Relations - Increase IEEE relevance to industry by making direct contacts and developing ongoing relationships with employers of our members and prospective members. Special and Ongoing Projects: Remote Meetings Project Conference Registration Model Region 3 Newsletter Re-design and Distribution Volunteers in Philanthropy Pilot Encourage and support proposals from Region 3 Sections. SSVR We want the Region to support project proposals from sections. Donāt forget about SSVR (Section Support via Regions) funds that Director Howard has been offering to sections/chapters for worthy local projects. I anticipate having additional SSVR funds available in 2004. We need proposals and projects from Sections to be able to share SSVR funds. Ad Hoc Committee of the Region 3 Strategic Planning Committee This group met in Atlanta on February 22-23, 2003. I presented a preliminary report on our meeting to the Region 3 ExCom and Region 3 Committee at SoutheastCon 2003. This assignment turns out to be somewhat more complicated than anticipated. After working with the Strategic Planning Committee and the Nominations & Appointments committee to develop 2004 initiatives & projects, and the proposed 2004 ExCom, I would like to postpone making any changes to the Region 3 Operations Manual and Bylaws. We will continue to develop recommendations for approval by the ExCom and Region Committee in 2004. Region 3 Corporate Communications The Regional Activities Board (RAB) Industry Relations Committee has requested each region to appoint an Industry Relations Representative. I have served in that capacity for several years. I recommend Region 3 continue to be a leader in the Industry Relations area. Bill Sims, from Nashville, has agreed to Chair the Industry Relations ad hoc committee for Region 3. We are looking for Region 3 Section volunteers to participate in the Industry Relations activities for Region 3. Please let Bill Sims or me know if you will get involved. Bill Harrison Director-Elect
