Region 3 Leadership Development Report November 2003 LD activities continue to expand in Region 3 as we prepare for a new administration in R3 and new officers in our sections for 2004. We also look forward to supporting new initiatives in R3 to better serve the membership of our region. A training session was held on September 30 for the officers of the newly re-activated Lower Cape Fear subsection in Wilmington, NC. A second training session was scheduled on September 27 in Richmond for the VA Council, but at that time the area was still struggling to recover from the ravages of hurricane Isabel, so that session has been postponed to early 2004. A workshop is also being planned for the NC Council in early 2004. Dates for these workshops have not been set. A training session for section officers will be held on Friday, November 21 1-5 PM, in Atlanta before the Region Committee meeting. All section representatives are encouraged to attend and all R3 excom are invited. A similar session is being planned for the next Region Committee meeting, March 26, 2004 in Greensboro. All areas and councils are encouraged to make use of the R3 LD resources to assure that their section officers are not only trained in IEEE processes but also can benefit from some of the excellent professional development and leadership training that we have to offer our volunteers. Keep these opportunities in mind when you plan your area / council meetings in 2004. New training modules have been added to the LD offerings, and more are in the works. These are listed on our newly revamped website at https://ewh.ieee.org/r3/leadership and are also featured in a new tri-fold brochure that can be downloaded from the website and printed for distribution. The current modules include: Intro to IEEE Region 3 Leadership - where do we fit in the "big picture" and why are we here? IEEE Leadership 2004 - the "nuts and bolts" of how a section operates, who to call for what and where the resources are. Communications Basics for Sections - how we use all the communication "tools" available to us to communicate and work with one another and how we communicate - both ways - with our members. Electronic Conferencing - It is the way we work now -- learn how. Time Management - we can't give you an extra hour each day but we can help you find it. Learning Styles - How to teach someone if they are aural, visual, or kinetic -- and how to tell Presentation Skills Personality Types - Uses Jungian (Myers-Briggs) type and teaches not only what you are and how you interact with people but how to deal with the other types. Mentoring - A critical part of developing our leaders is learning to mentor and be mentored Conflict Styles - Teaches Thomas-Kearney Conflict Styles and what your native style is and how you have to adapt to different situations. Projects - A quick look at a little-known fun activity and on-the-job training for management: Projects! Ideas for section / area / council / region level projects, including examples of past projects and sources for funding. Conference Basics - One of the best projects a section, area, or council can carry out is a seminar, workshop, or conference. Whether you want to host an existing conference or "roll your own", we give you the basics of how to plan and carry out a successful conference, including a look at the rules as well as the many resources available throughout the IEEE. Special version available for sections planning a SoutheastCon bid Project Management - How to plan, manage, and carry out successful projects. Vision, Mission, and Strategic Planning - Does your section have a vision of where it wants to be? Do you have a plan? Goals? Have you ever done strategic planning? Come learn how! Modules under development include a training session for new Region 3 committee chairs and officers (and ones in new positions), a training session for trainers, and training for the new Leadership by Developing Others initiative led by Dick Riddle. The R3 Leader module is being planned for an on-line training session using Placeware or a similar program in early 2004 and will be based on the R3 Bylaws, Operations Manual, Strategic Plan, and other applicable documents. The Training for Trainers module will help teach or hone training skills for those who want to train adult students in LD or other topics. The LDO modules will be developed in cooperation with the LDO committee as requested. Many thanks go out to the members of the Leadership Development Committee for their continued service to the Region in sharing their wisdom, experience, and knowledge Bill Ratcliff David Green Jim Howard Bill Harrison Charles Hickman Dick Riddle Bob Duggan Jim Beall Reed Thompson As we now offer a number of professional development modules for our volunteer leaders, we have been asked if these would be available for PD workshops, similar to the Professional Development Institute presentations that I present monthly in my local section. Unfortunately, much of the material that we present is provided to the IEEE for LD use only and cannot be used at a workshop for fee; however, I propose to work with the 2004-5 Educational Activities and PACE committees to develop some parallel modules that sections can offer to their members as PD workshops. The LDC exists to make you - the volunteer leaders of the IEEE on the section, chapter, area / council, and regional level - more successful in not only your IEEE endeavors but also in your career and life experiences. We welcome your input as to how we can better serve you in this capacity. Charles J. Lord, P.E. c.j.lord@ieee.org
