Northwest Florida IEEE Section Report October 31, 2003 Meetings When possible, IEEE Northwest Florida incorporates a technical lecture along with the meeting/tour of the month in order to obtain professional development hours towards continuing education for PEs. Meetings that have taken place since April are listed here. o April 22 - WSRE TV 23 o Explored new and innovative technology at local television station and observed their techniques for meeting DTV requirements by deadline. o May - No Meeting o June 12 - Solar Power Generation o Members met at "Warner Solar, Inc" to observe a solar system that is used to power a workshop. Excess power is sold back to the local power company (Gulf Power) o July - No Meeting o August 20 - Social Event with S.A.M.E. (NAS Pensacola) o Very successful social event combined with the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). Guest speaker - Congressman Jeff Miller - discussed presence of engineers in Washington and how he sees engineering as a necessity for America to grow. Held Q/A session. 80 in attendance o October 28 - Financial Advising o Held a meeting at O'Sullivan - Creel with various CPAs and an Estate Attorney concerning retirement planning o Discussed taxes and financial matters as they relate to estates, wills and trusts o Announced nominating committee and current nominations o Potential Meetings - o Navy Engineering Recruitment Dept. o Pensacola Regional Airport TRACON and control tower o December Social (NAS Pensacola) o Dr. Jim Bizdek - Fuzzy Logic (November) SoutheastCon IEEE NWF has requested application for an upcoming SoutheastCon but discovered positions were filled for the next several years. Recent Work * A few new Sr. Member applications * Many new contacts made at the August social event (College Dean, local Eng. Dept. head) * Bylaws completely updated and enforced * 2 of 3 required Nomination Committee established * IEEE NWF supporting student consulting at student Job Fair (Sept 24) on UWF campus * Planning for next years Regional High School Science Bowl. Will query EAB for funding soon. * IEEE NWF will establish new officer position next term - Education Outreach * IEEE NWF is supporting a student scholarship for EE & IEEE Student Members next year. * IEEE NWF will continue to support local University EE students projects' financially. * Sr. Membership has been pushed extensively. * Gave away palm pilot at last meeting. Winner's chances increase with number of meetings attended. * Planning is in the works for support of next years Engineers Week (Feb. '04).
