RSAC/RSR Report (10/31/03) Bruce Walcott, Chair - RSAC Eric Ackerman, Vice Chair - RSAC Trish Davis, RSR Acknowledgements RSAC would like to thank the IEEE volunteers who gave up a Saturday at home with their loved ones to conduct an SLTW this Fall. Specifically, to David Green, Pat Donohoe, Eric Ackerman, Butch Shadwell, Joey Duvall, Trish Davis, Jim Howard, Lou Lovas, John Matthews and Trish Davis (again) RSAC owes a great debt of gratitude and appreciation. RSAC notes that many of these individuals also conducted SLTW's last fall and the fall before that and... Final Report on 2003 Goals and Objectives At the Region 3 Meeting in November in Knoxville, Tennessee, RSAC had two very productive strategic planning sessions. Out of these sessions came the following goals and objectives for SAC over the coming 2003 calendar year: Goal 1: Complete the 2002 RSAC goal of "maximizing" Southeastcon 2003 participation while "minimizing" the logistical problems of student travel Progress as of 10/03: According to Mark Stokes, we had officially 196 students registered for Southeastcon 2003 plus about 20 branch counselors from 32 separate schools--many of them making their first appearance at an IEEE Southeastcon. This level of participation could not have been accomplished if it were not for the commitment and support of Region 3 local professional sections in providing sponsorship for so many students to come to Jamaica. We are encouraging all Region 3 student branches who have received any local support to attend a section meeting and thank the professionals as well as give them a summary of your experiences in Jamaica. It is hoped that this unprecedented demonstration of student branch support will foster even greater student/professional interaction in the future. Goal 2: Increase Branch Reporting from current rate of 20% to 25% by end of 2003 and address other issues of branch continuity and Post-Southeastcon MIA Syndrome: Progress as of 10/03: The reporting process is also the main topic of the 5 Student Leadership Training Workshops scheduled/conducted this fall. The location and dates of these workshops are: Sept. 20th - University of Alabama, Birmigham, AL Facilitators: David Greeen and Pat Donohoe Schools in Attendance: UAB and Miss. St. Oct. 4th - Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN Facilitator: Bruce Walcott Schools in Attendance: Univ. of Kentucky, Tenn. St., Vanderbilt, CBU, UT Martin Oct. 11th - University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL Facilitators: Eric Ackerman, Trish Davis, Joey Duvall, Jim Howard, Butch Shadwell Schools in Attendance: FIT, Univ. of Central Florida, Univ. of South Florida, FAMU Oct. 18th - North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC (Co-Hosted byVaTech) Facilitators: Lou Lovas and Chris Ruffin Schools in Attendance: NCSU, NCA&T, Virginia Tech, NC GTCC Nov. 8th - Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, GA Facilitators: John Matthews and Trish Davis Note: Schools attending this SLTW in Atlanta will be given until November 15th to submit their annual plans while all other schools must submit their annual plans by November 1st. An update on the number of schools reporting will be given at the Region 3 EXCOMM meeting in Atlanta. In terms of revitalizing schools which have hosted Southeastcon in the past and have seen a significant drop in student activity and participation in following years, RSAC is happy to report that every school that hosted a Southeastcon since 1996 had at least one representative at Southeastcon 2003. Also, two form Southeastcon host schools (NCSU and VaTech) co-hosted Oct. 18th SLTW in Raleigh. Goal 3: In concert with upcoming RSAC review, assess effectiveness of current "traditional" student activities. Progress as of 7/03: The RSAC is also chair of the IEEE SAC Strategic Planning Committee which is also undergoing a review this year as well. SAC met October 17-19 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There, the charter and functions of SAC were revised to align with its current focus. Respectfully submitted by, Bruce L. Walcott RSAC Region 3
