IEEE REGION 3 REPORT FOR 2003 WINSTON-SALEM SECTION, IEEE NORTH CAROLINA COUNCIL 2003 SECTION OFFICERS : Chair: Edward J Fuller, Vice Chair: James Kemerling, Secy/Treas: C. Leon Shore, Awards and Recognition: Craig Hamilton, PACE: James Kemerling, Web Editor: Dennis Dice, Newsletter Editor: Dick Riddle 2004 SECTION OFFICERS: Chair: James Kemerling, Vice Chair: Ersin Bayrum, Secy/Treas: C.Leon Shore, Past Chair: Edward J. Fuller, Awards etc: Craig A. Hamilton, PACE: Edward J. Fuller, Web Editor: Dennis Dice, Newsletter Editor: Dick Riddle SECTION ACTIVITIES: 6 Technical Presentations and 3 EXCOM Meetings were held. All technical meetings were held at noon with a light lunch provided by the section to all attendees with an average attendance of 30. A telecom with Vicki Waldman relevant to Section Activities and Status for 2003 was held. 2 EXCOM members had new SAMIEE Training (Now used to get information to our Active Section Members each month so that we can keep the U.S. and E-Mail list current). 2 Delegates attended SECON Meeting in Jamaica, 4 to attend Atlanta Meeting in Nov. The W-S Section Professional Develop- ment Award was presented to the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, WFU School of Medicine. The Section joined the N.C. Piedmont Council of Engineering and Technical Societies (PCETS) for 2003. 2004 membership is contingent upon review by 2004 EXCOM. Our Web editor created Web pages for SECON 04, N.C. Council, and PCETS. 3 EXCOM members participated in the N.C. Council Meeting (9/6/03). EXCOM response to the October SCOOP Survey was submitted. We are supporting the Central N.C. Section in hosting the 2004 REGION 3 Convention in Greensboro, NC. Our Section will continue to use U.S. mailed Newsletters about our section technical meetings as we have found that hard copy generates better attendance than E-Mail and Web-Site Notification. We anticipate increased participation at our meetings in 2004 as the WFU/Va-Tech Bio-Medical Engineering Consolidation is fully underway. EXCOM has endorsed a RAB Friend of IEEE Award to WFU for its 15 years of support for the IEEE which will be presented in the near future. Without their support the Winston-Salem Section would have demised. The Section will hold a dinner conference in November for the EXCOM members and wives in recognition and appreciation of their service in 2003. One Member was elevated to Senior Status. We will continue in our attempt to elevate the 49 other eligible members to Senior Status. Our total section membership is presently at 183. The lack of engineering jobs in our area as well as the high cost of membership limits our growth at the present time. Our survival as a section is contingent upon the growth of the new Bio-medical Companies and the introduction of a Nanotechnology Center to our area in December by Wake Forest University as well as the continued support of the Wake Forest University Dept of Biomedical Education. We will continue our attempt to start a Student Section at Winston-Salem State University as they now have a Department of Computer Science. Past efforts at Forsyth Tech have not been successful. Respectfully submitted by Edward J. Fuller 2003 Section Chair Winston-Salem Section
