IEEE REGION 3 AREA 9 REPORT TO REGION 3 EXCOM October, 2004 At the beginning of the year our goals for 2004 were set as follows: 1. Increasing the number of Senior Members by 3. 2. Meet with the Jamaica Government Minister with the responsibility for Technology, with the view of influencing technological decisions on behalf of the country. 3. Meet with the Jamaica Governor General. 4. Hosting a Technological Seminar or Discussion Forum 5. Increasing UWI student participation in SoutheastCon 6. Sending Delegates to SoutheastCon 2004 and PACE Activities The Jamaica Section has met objective #6 and is making efforts to meet the other objectives. The Section has continued to organize technical presentations. In July, The topic ?Network and Information Security? was presented by Karlington Williams (Information Security Engineer) Krishna Phillipps (IP Network Design & Security Manager) Michael Sutherland (Information Security Engineer) & Shauneil James (Information Security Manager). The presentation was quite interesting and informative. A tour of Merit Communications facility was organized for August but was rescheduled by the host to September. Due to the passage of Hurricane Ivan, the tour was again scheduled. Meetings held prior to July are as follows: January: Section & Society Retreat to formulate 2004 Goals & Objectives. Both the Communications Society and the Computer Society participated. February: Annual Social Section and Society members March: Presentation on CDMA Cellular Networks by Oceanic Digital, Jamaica Ltd. The UTech branch attended and participated in the student contests at SoutheastCon 2004. Communications Society Chapter & Computer Society Chapter Both Affinity groups of the IEEE Jamaica Section continue to make their contributions to the development of members in Area 9. Thanks to region 3 EXCOM members for enquiring and keeping us in mind during the passage of hurricane Ivan across Jamaica. We suffered much physical loss as a result of the hurricane but with life spared we can again climb to the top of the mountain.
