IEEE Region 3 Area 8 Report 04-2005 Area 8 Chair's Goals for 2005: 1. Continue to develop consistent communication with the three sections in Area 8. Assessment: Communication is improved, but more work is needed. 2. Make sure all sections have their reports in on time (Meetings, Officers, Financial) Assessment: It is my understanding that this goal was achieved. 3. Make contact with all section chairs within Area 8 at least four times this year. Assessment: This goal has not yet been achieved. 4. Ensure that all sections are aware of, and encourage them to send representatives to Sections Congress 2005, Southeastcon, and other Region 3 Committee meetings that may be scheduled. Assessment: Work toward this goal will continue throughout the year. 5. Encourage all section officers to participate in leadership training opportunities. Assessment: Work on this goal will continue. Evansville-Owensboro Section: Jeremiah Q. Parker reports that the Evansville-Owensboro is comprised of about 250 electrical, electronics, and computer engineers from the Tri-State (Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky) area. The section is focused on bringing together engineers, providing a means of exchanging ideas and knowledge, and promoting awareness of science, engineering, and technology. The Evansville-Owensboro Section has approximately six meetings per year, consisting of technical speakers, social meetings, and occasionally, tours of local businesses. Lexington Section Melissa Gray reports that 2004 was a successful year for the Lexington Section with 10 meetings during the year. Members of the Lexington Section participated in twp development meetings. In October the section visited Intertek Testing Services North America for a tour of their telecommunications testing facility. In December the section met jointly with the Louisville Section for Christmas dinner and a PACE program was presented by Don Hill. The first section newsletter was published and mailed in December. So far in 2005, there have been three section meetings and one ExCom meeting. Monthly meetings are being planned for the balance of the year The Lexington Section is working on streamlining meeting announcements by using the IEEE e-notice and will be testing its response for the first time in April. The Lexington Section goals for the coming year include more volunteer participation and membership development. The section is also evaluating establishing a GOLD society as well as a technical society in the Lexington area. The biggest challenge for the section is to help revive the student chapter at the University of Kentucky. Louisville Section: David Eastham reports that The Louisville Section has had two Excom meetings so far this year. Also the section has completed one technical meeting on Bio-Engineering and another technical meeting on Data Mining is scheduled for April 7th. The section plans to have two more technical chapter meetings and three social events by year end. The Louisville section has participated in sponsoring an award for the 2005 Louisville Science Fair and also for a distinguished member of the Kentucky Professional Engineering Society. The section is working toward redeveloping their local web site to provide a porthole for information for the Louisville area. Also, they are currently working with the Courier Journal (local newspaper) and Business First to actively promote the IEEE section in an attempt to increase membership John Parr Area 8 Chair
