IEEE Miami Section Report to Region 3 And the Florida Council April 8-10, 2005 Ft. Lauderdale, FL Accomplishments and Activities 1. The section submitted all its officer, meeting and financial reports on time. 2. The section conducted the 2005 Future City Competition for the State of Florida on January 17, 2005. More than 40 schools participated. The winning school (Epiphany) represented the state in Washington DC at the National Finals during the Engineers week. They won the second place Nationally and won five other awards. Many articles about this team were in the Miami Herald and USA Today. Governor Jeb Bush will meet the team, and the Florida Organizers at the end of April. This has been a very important and worthwhile effort for our section. 3. The section is participating as a supporter to several minority school programs which are funded by the department of education through the multi- year Gear-up Program to help young school kids form poor areas seek science and engineering field. Section members give lectures and presentation, classroom activities and projects as well as mentoring. 4. The FIU student branch is participating in all the Southeastcon'05 competitions. The Student branch at UM is also active and report several activities. 5. Seven section and chapter technical meetings were already held since January 1, 2005. We will also have a distinguished lecture activity in early May 2005. We are planning a social even t 6. Our PACE Chair attended the PACE meeting in Arizona. 7. The section is co-sponsoring the IEEE/CEFC conference, April 30-May 3, 2006. This is one of the main conferences of the magnetics society. The section will continue to be very active and will participate in many activities that benefit the members and enhance our interaction with the community. We will also continue to seek organizing conferences that will benefit our members and our profession.
