IEEE Savannah Section Report for Region 3 Meeting at Fort Lauderdale, Florida - April 8-10, 2005 Chair: Bob Cook Treasurer: Matt Conner Vice Chair: Joy Reed Bob Cook of Georgia Southern University continues as Chair for the section. We are happy to welcome back Matt Conner from Savannah Electric as Treasurer. Joy Reed of Armstrong Atlantic State University moves from Treasurer to Vice-Chair. Several of our Excom meetings this year were to plan for our 50th celebration festivities. Our anniversary meeting was held to the day in October 2004, 50 years after the first one. About 50 members and guests celebrated with a fine dinner, and enjoyable speech by one of the local newscasters. We want to thank Region 3 for financial help for our 50th Anniversary in October through SSVR (Section Support Via Region) funds. The Section held ten Section meetings this year, in Savannah, Statesboro, and Hilton Head. We have tried adjusting the meeting schedules and locations with mixed results. The evening meetings still seem to have the best attendance 10-20+. Our monthly newsletter, the Annunciator, publicizes these meetings. Andrew Laughlin serves as editor. Scott Hamlin, Chair, Savannah Section Education Activities, has agreed to participate in the Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) and attend the Training Workshop to be held on July 23, 2005 in Atlanta, GA. Scott continues to serve as a director of a regional South Carolina science fair. The Section makes awards to winners of two regional science fairs in Georgia and South Carolina, and several Section members serve as judges. The science fair projects in the physical sciences, math and computer related fields are extremely disappointing and efforts to reach the teachers have been unsuccessful. We are looking forward to the TISP initiative to help stimulate cooperation in helping to influence our pre-college youth towards careers in science and engineering. The Section co-sponsored Savannah Engineering Academy for high school students, with Armstrong Atlantic State and Georgia Southern Universities. We also provided funds to support a student Hovercraft project at Armstrong Atlantic University. We co-sponsored an Engineering Week Symposium with other societies. There will be three members participating at the SoutheastCon 2005 this year. Respectfully Submitted, April 4, 2005 Joy Reed
