Report to the IEEE Region 3 Excom and Committee North Carolina Council January 24, 2006 The five sections in the NC Council are alive and well, with re-vitalization efforts underway for the Charlotte Section and Lower Cape Fear Subsection. The officers (-elect) for the North Carolina Council for 2006-7 are: Chair: Charles Lord Vice Chair: Numan Dogan Secretary/Treasurer: Dennis Dice These are joined by the 2006 section chairs: Central NC Section: Numan Dogan Charlotte Section: James Conrad Eastern NC Section: Roger Lawrence Western NC Section: James Erickson Winston-Salem Section: David Griffith We are still filling the committee positions for the Council. The Main objectives that I see for the NC Council this year are: 1) Revitalization efforts for Charlotte and Lower Cape Fear (LCFSS). Charlotte is well underway, with new chair Jim Conrad already having held an all-day workshop for his excom last Saturday for training and brainstorming on a strategic plan as well as short-term (tactical) plans for the year. He has an energetic group that will make great things happen for their section. We will be organizing a workshop for the LCFSS in the Spring, which will include an LDO workshop on mentoring and leadership skills. Director-Elect (and section/chapter support chair) Bill Ratcliff and LDO project manager (and NCC mentor) Dick Riddle are working with me to make this happen. 2) Investigate a replacement or revitalization of the North Carolina Symposium and Exhibition (NCSE). The NCSE was a combination paper conference / trade show for over 40 years and was very successful in the heyday of the trade show. It has since had mixed success as a series of tutorials and vertical conferences. The last time it was held (2004) it lost significant money. As this is the one project that we hold for our members statewide and is the primary source of income for the Council, we are investigating ways that we can make this financially viable as well as provide a service to the most NC members possible. 3) Ramp up our state-wide professional development hours certification program. The NCC is registered with the NC Board of Licensing [for PE's] as a PDH provider, and we are setting up a state-wide network for all five of our sections to provide PDH certification for IEEE events state-wide. Our new Educational Activities Chair, Paul Goodson, will be heading up this effort. 4) The NC Council will be holding a weekend development retreat for the officers of our five sections sometime this year. The Charlotte Section has offered to host this. This will be an opportunity for other sections, particularly the Columbia and Piedmont sections, to participate and make use of this valuable resource. We will announce our plans as soon as they are made. The NCC will hold its first meeting of the year via e-conference sometime in February, and our first face-to-face meeting will be March 31 in Memphis as part of the R3 meetings at SoutheastCon 2006.
