To: Region 3 ExCom Fr: David Green, Region 3 ECSC Sb: Electronic Communication Systems Coordinator Report Dt: January 15, 2006 I have agreed to continue to work with Communications Chair Bill Clayton and the many others who are the members of the Communications committee to support the systems that facilitate communications for IEEE service to the member. Bill Ratcliff chaired the RAB Section/Chapter Support Committee for Electronic Communication Coordinators last year (and this year) and with real meetings of that group and I noticed that the other regions have someone participating at that level who is more like our chair of the Communications Committee rather than a member of it. I have recommended and Bill Clayton, Bill Ratcliff, and George McClure have concurred that Region 3 member of that committee should be the chair of the Region 3 Communications Committee. The electronic services used by IEEE volunteers includes E-mail, mailing lists, Newsgroups, Web services, TWiki Site, IRC, aliases and as well as experimental capabilities like richer conferencing environments and collaboration services. Speaking of the e-mail alias system... if you are new to your position or are passing things to your successor, please let me know how things should change. Presently my goals and objectives for 2006 include 1. Assist in keeping the group aliases current. 2. Keeping the services functioning including a. plan replacement or decommissioning of ie3col b. newsgroup revitalization (or elimination) c. ieeer3 our meeting support server 3. Be an active member on the Communications Committee 4. Assisting with various ECC items such as eNotice, mailing lists, etc. I understand that additional goals and objectives may be derived from the planning activities at the ExCom meeting in Atlanta. Group aliases (lists) should, in my opinion, be normally controlled by someone close to the action. That would mean that the Conference Committee alias should be controlled by someone on that committee with support from the Communications Committee as needed. I would also suggest there be at least two administrators (one a backup). I am serving as the backup on many lists and would be willing to serve as the backup administrator on others as appropriate.
