Report to the IEEE Region 3 Excom Leadership Development January 16, 2006 Leadership Development in Region 3 was in a period of slow but steady growth, helped primarily by the Leadership by Developing Others (LDO) program / project. Support for this project resulted in leadership development training at SoutheastCon 2005 in Fort Lauderdale and in Atlanta. I also held a traditional training session for the VA Council in Richmond January 29th. Online training took an upturn in 2005 with a number of web-based live training sessions, two on electronic conferencing and two on mentoring skills as part of the LDO program. All of these made use of the Microsoft LiveMeeting program (formerly PlaceWare). The highligß∑ht of 2005 was two presentations done with former IEEE President Raymond Findlay at Sections Congress in Tampa. Like the Congress itself, it was an opportunity for Region 3 to shine and 'show the world how it's done'. Plans for 2006: * Area/Council and large/remote section LD training as requested. The VA Council has asked for a special training session this year (11 March) which will concentrate more on conferences and project training as they prepare for SoutheastCon 2007. The newly-revitalized Charlotte Section has requested a training session that will be held this coming Saturday (22 Jan) at UNC-Charlotte. I also anticipate a training workshop in 2006 hosted by the NC Council, date and place to be determined. There will also be training at SoutheastCon 2006 in Memphis, and a possible training session in late 2006 for new officers/candidates for 2007 and beyond. * Support for other R3 programs and initiatives: LDO: a request has already be received for LDO training in NW Florida (Pensacola area) and we are working on a date. There will also be LDO training (nature and targeted audience to be determined) at SoutheastCon. As this project rolls out at the local level, we will begin train-the-trainer sessions as the year progresses. New Initiatives: As the new R3 administration gears up, there will be new initatives that will involve training needs, and I stand ready to support these. The first part of this will occur in less than two weeks in Atlanta, as we will have some refresher / update training on the bylaws, ops manual, and traditional leadership roles in R3 on Friday afternoon. * Training opportunities outside R3, primarily from our presence at SC05: Bill Ratcliff and I were invited (drafted actually) to train PACE leaders on LDO at the PACE workshop in St Louis March 4. I has invited by the Dallas (TX) Section to come hold an LD workshop there on Feb 25, which I have accepted. I have had inquiries from some other sections outside R3 (and even outside the US!), which are still in the discussion phase. * More use of web-based training for those topics that can be taught via this medium. Many "people skills" topics are definitely 'lab' courses and need to be taught face-to-face. These need more train-the-trainer tools and sessions to increase the pool of available instructors as we progress forward. Training has become an integral part of the structure and operation of R3, much like e-conferencing and the open networking that has become our "modus operandi" thanks to a continuous line of visionary leaders. I look forward to the continued evolutionary and revolutionary changes that continue to occur within our region. Charles Lord R3 LD Chair
