Meeting March 31-April 2, 2006 Prepared March 15, 2006 The major event to report is R3 Sections PACE participation in the Leadership Workshop, March 3 - 5, 2006, at St. Louis, MO. Region 3 Professional Activities section representative and other committee members supported the Leadership Workshop by participating in the 3-day information-packed event. Up to $800 of travel and lodging expenses were covered by the Region 3 Leadership Workshop budget. There were nineteen representatives from Region 3. The following issues were raised during the Friday night breakout session: 1. Continuing education (6 Sigma, Project Management Institute - PMI) 2. More S-PACs 3. More M-PAC/S-PAC programs 4. Better Careers Package 5. Library of CD/DVD Training modules 6. Employment/unemployment assistance 7. Resource awareness 8. Database of Best Practices for PACE 9. Add member benefits 10. Career consulting discount 11. More GOLD chapters 12. Marketing tools (IEEE): industry relations, individuals, etc. Then attendees were challenged to submit 3 recommendations from Region 3 to the Leadership Workshop Committee. These recommendations were to be refined at the Sunday morning breakout session to include possible changes as a result of the Workshop sessions. The Friday night recommendations were submitted as follows: 1. It is recommended that IEEE provide continuing education benefits such as discounts on courses such as project management and 6 sigma, transferable to employers if they pay. This should be viewed as yet another benefit from IEEE to employers. 2. Compile a database of "Best Practices" in PACE activities at the IEEE-USA level. 3. Prepare IEEE-USA Resource Awareness packages including IEEE marketing tools for industry relations, individuals, etc. The 2006 Leadership Workshop Program is on the IEEE-USA Web site. Participation in the Workshop sessions on Saturday gave our Region 3 attendees few more ideas. The Sunday morning breakout session discussion resulted in the following additional topics of interest: 1. Forecast transitional and educational needs for emerging technologies, as part of career development. 2. Provide training and resources to help IEEE volunteers balance competing demands on their time. 3. Expand the Region 3 mentoring program to develop IEEE leaders and engage members. After timely discussion, the group voted to have two most pressing recommendations to be included in the IEEE-USA platform for 2006. The final recommendations are as follows: 1. It is recommended that IEEE provide continuing education benefits such as discounts on courses such as project management and 6 sigma, transferable to employers if they pay. This should be viewed as yet another benefit from IEEE to employers. 2. Forecast transitional and educational needs for emerging technologies, as part of careerdevelopment.
