IEEE Florida West Coast Section Report to the IEEE Region 3 Meeting, October 2007 Mission: “To Share The Power Of Engineering Knowledge” Accomplishments and Activities: 1. The section is continuing its activities in the form of technical and administrative activities as well as community relations. 2. The section continues it involvement in the IEEE's "Teacher In Service" educational program. Our TISP Chairman is in the process of recruiting volunteers for the upcoming November 14th, Great-American-Teach-In program in Tampa area schools. 3. The Section’s new Women In Engineering (WIE) group and Engineering in Medicine & Biology (EMB) Chapter continue to thrive. The WIE group is looking to attract distinguished speakers in order to generate awareness. The EMB Chapter has already hosted a well attended Chapter meeting. 4. We have started the planning process for our big 8th annual "Celebrate Engineering" banquet that will be held on February 15th as a kick-off to Engineering Week. This engineering awards banquet will be held in partnership with AFE, ASHRAE, ASME, AIChE, & SNAME. 5. The 2007 PL-UG Fest is scheduled for November 15th. This will be a full day event of technical presentations focused on hardware design using Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. Over 100 gusts attended. We recently had a great seminar on Motor Design and Softstart Control Applications. In the next month we are planning events to cover “Major Changes—2007 NESC”, and an EWEEK Luncheon that will cover the future of engineering. 6. Section volunteers played a role in ensuring that the 2007 annual PES meeting that was held in Tampa in June came off without a hitch. The section is actively planning on supporting the upcoming 2008 I&CPS conference in May as well as the T&D show in 2012 and the MTT conference in 2014. The section will continue to be very active and will participate in many activities that benefit the members and enhance our interaction with the community. We will also continue to seek organizing conferences that will benefit our members and our profession.
