Professional Activities Report Mississippi Section: Engineers' week Celebration 2/22/2008 Aaron Achord, Section PACE Chair. Joe Savage, Section Treasurer, and Winnfort Myles, VP Professional Activities organized a day in celebration of Engineers' Week and hands on projects highlighting exciting things engineers do. Looking at the pictures, one can tell the kids were having a ball. The students toured areas in the Raytheon plant, thanks to Winfort. If one of the students attending is turned on to engineering (electrical or otherwise), as a result of this activity, the program is a success. Richmond Section The Richmond Section hosted Russ Harrison in an engaging evening with networking and discussion about IEEE-USA and the role it plays in shaping public policy. Section members in attendance were very impressed with the way Russ related to them in a convincing manner. Side bar discussion between Russ an few other members were lively and lasted late into the evening. If there were differing views, they were kept at the expected professional level. Huntsville Section The section was instrumental in helping the IEEE Student Branch organize a successful Student Professional Awareness Conference, March 27, 2008, where six universities, 100 students, representatives from local industry, and IEEE Huntsville Section were partners in an event that featured Mike Andrews speaking on "Time and Self Management" and Dr. Lewis Brown speaking on "the 'Secrets' of Success for an Engineer". They are already looking into expanding this into a bigger event next year. IEEE-USA Annual Meeting Attendance at the IEEE-USA Annual Meeting this year exceeded expectations. The theme was "Green Engineering: A Push Towards Sustainability." Kewynote speaker Jill Buck, Founder, Go Green Initiative, presented the issue as a the responsible and the profitable thing to do. Her presentation as well as all the others are on the IEEE-USA Web site. Region 3 had 26 members attending. The Huntsville Section and Student Branch had a poster session that highlighted their work on the S-PAC. It was very well received. We had 14 Sections represented at the meeting, and each had access to multiple resources, issues, and speakers he or she can tap. This is a golden opportunity for our sections to bring home these topics to benefit our members. Section PACE Plans Underway Tallahassee Section started planning for a Professional Development Seminar (PDS) September 13, 2008. Jamaica Section is planning a PDS for the fall of 2008. I need your help in encouraging the leadership in all sections to plan one professional activity between now and the end of the year. This is a very attainable goal. All we need is the will and a champion from each section with whom we can work. to make it happen. 110th Congress, 2nd Session: Lofgren Employment-Based Immigration Reform Proposals, April 2008. IEEE-USA is strongly encouraging its members to support two House Bills, HR 5882 and HR 5921, which deal with family-sponsored immigrant visas and foreign nationals.
