Area 9 Report for January 12, 2009 Region 3 ExCom E-Conference Introduction The Officers of the IEEE Jamaica Section for the year 2008 were: Wilfred A. Roberts - Chair, Carolyn Ferguson - Vice Chair, Sheldon Smith – Secretary, David H. Miller – Treasurer However, on January 22, 2008, Ms. Carolyn Ferguson - Vice Chair tendered her resignation due to family responsibilities. Daniel Tulloch-Reid was co-opted to serve for the rest of the 2008 administration. The Area 9 Chair was Devon Gayle. The current officers are: Daniel Tulloch-Reid - Chair Winston G. Smith – Vice Chair Sheldon Smith – Secretary David H. Miller – Treasurer The Area 9 Chair is Wilfred A. Roberts The goals of the section were as follows: 1. Increasing membership attendance and participation in meetings. 2. Presenting more diversified technical presentations.  3. Increasing student participation in SoutheastCon. 4. Sending Delegates to Sections Congress 2008. 5. Participating in Regional and PACE Activities including E Conferences. 6. Acquisition of a replacement Jamaica Section Charter Members Attendance at Meetings This objective was not fully met since attendance at ExCom meetings was somewhat similar to previous years. However there were improvements in attendance at monthly presentations. The members that attended participated effectively in the activities. Jamaica Section Formation The Jamaica Section was presented with a Certificate by IEEE commemorating the formation of the Jamaica Section to replace the missing Jamaica Section Charter. Region 3 Meetings & Sections Congress 2008, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada In attendance were: Devon Gayle, Area 9 Chair and Wilfred A. Roberts, Jamaica Section Chair (Primary Delegate). Standing Committees: Awards and Recognition The 2008 Jamaica Section Award to the Most Outstanding IEEE Student in Engineering & Computing at the University of Technology, Jamaica was presented to Ms. Karene Fisher. Publications Website Development Further upgrading was done to our website by our Webmaster Milverton Moore in keeping with IEEE’s programme. Student Activities The Student Branch of the University of Technology, Jamaica remains committed to the ideals of the IEEE. Mr. Vincent Hewitt the longest serving Student Branch Counselor in the IEEE Jamaica Section continued to serve at UTECH. Educational Activities Dr. Paul Aiken, Head, Electronics Unit, University of the West Indies (UWI)/Senior Engineer and Lecturer in Physics, Chair, Educational Activities Committee has agreed to assist with the development of the UWI Student Branch.
