Member Development and Life Cycle Management Committee Report Report to Region 3 Member Development and Life Cycle Management Committee Charles Lord, Chair The challenge to engage and develop our members throughout their life cycle and their various roles in the IEEE continues. The "Member Development Committee" has gone from the "Member Engagement and Development Committee" to the "Member Development and Life Cycle Management Committee" to better define the roles that we as the R3 leadership need to take to develop and engage our members. There is a lot of work being done and even more to be done in 2009 and beyond. Education and Training As you can see from the Director's Report, there will be an emphasis on the Education and Training part of Member Development; this will focus primarily on three areas: 1. Basic Training: the 'nuts and bolts' of how to be a volunteer leader in the IEEE at all levels. The first order of business - in progress - is some online modules that can be used stand-alone or as part of an instructor-led online training experience for section and chapter officers and 'key' committee positions. We will also be integrating these into some live workshops along with some of the parts of #2 below. Not only is this needed ASAP for new officers but it also will help fulfill one of the top issues from SC08. 2. Advanced Leadership: these are the elements, many of which we have been teaching already in R3, for learning both leadership skills and people skills. If we as IEEE leaders are to work to engage our members, we need to learn just what that means and how we can facilitate that. These are skills that are best learned 'live' in an interactive group and will need to be part of some live presentations, beginning at the area/council level. We will be taking the modules that we have been teaching in the past and will be updating them as well as adding new modules that we need in order to help our leaders grow themselves as well as their members. 3. Member level training: If we expect our members to become actively engaged in the IEEE and with one another, we need to provide ways for them to gain the skills to carry this out and grow in their careers (professional as well as IEEE). This will be a combination of some of the elements of #2 above as well as other areas, including but not limited to: - Career planning and development - Professional / personal development - Technical development Many elements of these already exist within the niches (or 'silos' if you will) of the IEEE. We will be drawing from many resources to collect what exists and acquire (or develop) what doesn't exist yet. Areas we will be drawing from immediately include PACE, Educational Activities, Leadership Development (including other regions' resources), and the Technical Management Council (formerly Engineering Management Society). These will also be integrated into the new ad-hoc led by Lee Stogner to help respond the the economic challenges we face and may continue to face in 2009 and beyond. The plan is to help prepare our members to be ready for career transitions before they happen. I will be taking the lead on item #1, and I will be working with Bruce Walcott (EAC Chair) and Susan Ronning (PAOC Co-Chair) to develop #2 and #3. We are currently considering integrating some of this training as part of the R3 meeting as part of SoutheastCon 2009 in Atlanta. More on this as it develops. Member Engagement and Life Cycle Member Recruitment and Recovery The other two areas that are already in progress are Member Engagement and Life Cycle, which is being led by my Vice Chair Butch Shadwell, and Member Recruitment and Recovery, currently under Director-Elect Lee Stogner. These will continue to grow and be integrated into the MDLCM committee as we form our charter. There is much happening, and much more to be done! Come join us and make it happen! cjl 1/10/09
