Educational Activities Report - IEEE Region 3 ExComm The Region 3 Educational Activities Committee is focused on aligning Educational Activities with Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) goals. The following list of issues is not intended to be inclusive but is an attempt to prioritize the challenges facing the profession from an Educational Activities perspective: STEM Pipeline - While not all IEEE members joined the society as IEEE Student Members, ALL IEEE members were students. Region 3 is similar to other five regions in the U.S. and is facing a crisis in the number of students entering STEM higher educational programs. In a recent report to congress, 15-year-old students in Regions 1-6 (i.e., the U.S.) ranked 28th in math literacy and 24th in science literacy worldwide. In terms of potential new IEEE members in Region 3, we note that the U.S. (regions 1-6) ranks 20th among all nations in the proportion of 24-year-olds who earn degrees in natural science or engineering. Clearly, this is an educational activities issue which aligns with the MGA model. Awards - The Region 3 Education Activities Committee is responsible for the promotion and recommendation of the Region 3 Employer Professional Development Award. The 2009 Employer Professional Development Award went to 2009 Siemens Energy and Automation and was awarded at IEEE Southeastcon 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia. Nominations for the 2010 IEEE Region 3 Professional Development are now open. The committee would like to continue the momentum from last year and have another employer who embodies the principles espoused by IEEE concerning professional development recognized. Here are the details: EMPLOYER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD Purpose: To recognize organizations employing IEEE members for contributions to employee continuing education and professional development.
