IEEE-USA Government Activities 1. Congressional Visits Day will be held in Washington, DC, 28-29 April. This is an annual two-day event that brings scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, and technology executives to Washington to raise visibility and support for science, engineering, and technology. Uniquely multi-sector and multi-disciplinary, the SET CVD is coordinated by coalitions of companies, professional societies and educational institutions and it is open to all who believe that science and technology are the cornerstone of our Nation's future. Because of the long-lead investment required for basic research, government support for basic research is needed to maintain a competitive edge for innovation. The two-day event consists of a series of briefings and meetings highlighted with visits to your Congressional delegates. Members are encouraged to participate, with section support. https://www.ieeeusa.org/policy/cvd/default.asp 2. The IEEE-USA Employment and Career Services (ECS) Committee is meeting this weekend in San Diego. Ed Kirchner is our Region 3 liaison to the committee. Director Lee Stogner has charged the committee with finding ways to address the engineering unemployment problem, which becomes worse in our region with the completion of space shuttle flights, and retirement of the remaining vehicles, at year end. Some 12,000 jobs will be lost with the end of the shuttle program and the deferral of the replacement Constellation program, with its Ares crew capsule. https://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/news_space_thewritestuff/ 2010/03/is-nasa-violating-the-law-by-killing-moon-program.html 3. The ECS Online Forum is available to members to exchange information and ideas about career strategies. This is a new virtual community where members can network and collaborate with one another on employment and career strategies. This community will provide you with discussion groups, chat rooms and resource files. These resource files include: PowerPoint slides and Word documents that pertain to resume writing, networking, interviewing skills and information on setting fees if you are a consultant. You are invited to become one of over 3,000 members and help build this new community. Use your IEEE Web Account to join in. https://www.ieeecommunities.org/ecs 4.
