The Winston-Salem Section is a small section of 150-170 members at any given time. The metropolian and surrounding areas do not employ large numbers of engineers for development and manufacturing as they did decades ago. We have a significant number of Affiliates and Associates. The section has a small cadre of dedicated volunteers who work hard to keep the section active and to support an EMBS Student Chapter that is associated with Wake Forest University and Virginia Tech. The section held an election at its November meeting and three officers were elected for the 2010-2011 years. Bob Jackson was elected Chairman, Bill Williams was elected Vice-Chairman, and Leon Shore was elected to the office of Secretary-Treasurer. We held nine technical monthly meetings in 2009, with subjects ranging from our local water supply infrastructue and associateed technology, to plug-in electric cars, to electronically controlled radiation equipment for cancer treatment. The meetings were held over lunch at a local restaurant, in their private dining room, with an average attendance of 25. Our EMBS Student Chapter has 12 members of several engineering disciplines doing graduate work, several working toward a PhD degree. The group participated in several fund raising events and social events. They visited local highschools, giving talks on the four disciplines of research that make up the School of Biomedical Engineering Sciences at Wake Forest University/Virginia Tech. Goals for 2010-2011 are to increase our membership and grade, to hold six to ten technical and administrative meetings, and to communicate effectively with our members.
