IEEE Savannah Section Chair Report for October 2010 Region 3 Meeting 1 October 2010 We have no issues requiring Region 3 attention at this time. Section Activities: The Savannah Section of IEEE had a full calendar of events in the spring of 2010: * In June, our own Dr. Cook gave a presentation outlining some of the issues in completing a Mission to Mars. This year we held our June meeting on Electrical Engineering Day during lunch so that our members had a chance to mingle with the future engineers. * In April, we toured Kigre Inc., a manufacturer of solid-state lasers. We also supplied volunteers for the Sea Island Regional Science Fair. This year's winner of the Savannah Section award went to Reid D’Amico for his project titled "Engineering a Hydroelectric Turbine to Harness the Energy of Tidal Change”. * In March, our meeting was titled "Semiconducting III-nitride nanowires: FETs, LEDs, and lasers." presented by Dr. Benjamin Klein from Georgia Tech Savannah. * Our February meeting was held in conjunction with the Savannah E-Week Technical Training Conference on February 16 at Armstrong Center. This year's theme was "Staying Alive: Sustaining, Innovating & Managing." * Our Section also supplied volunteers for the Savannah Engineering Academy. The Academy is a week-long summer program for high school juniors and seniors hosted by Georgia Tech Savannah. In each of the five day sessions, students learn about an engineering discipline, compete in hands on challenges and visit local engineering facilities. The academy is made possible by local companies, professional organizations, and professional engineers who volunteer their time and talents to academy students. As you can see, we've been fortunate to rotate our meetings throughout the area, including the region's various universities. Hosting at least some of our Section meetings on University campuses has definitely led to an increase in Student member participation. As always, you are always welcome to attend one of our Section meetings. Details can be found at https://ewh.ieee.org/r3/savannah/. Please let me know if you have any questions.
