Region 3, We just completed a successful "Career Survival for Engineers and Scientists in the 21st Century" workshop on October 23 in Cocoa Village, Florida. This workshop was coordinated with a similar workshop that was part of the Region 3 Fall Meeting that was held during the weekend of October 1 - 3 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Florida workshop was also delivered to Region 3 Sections across the Southeast through a live web cast. Both of these workshops were in response to the ongoing economic news in Region 3 and the results of our Employment Survey that indicates that we have a unemployment rate in our membership of 14%. I want to say thanks to the extended IEEE, IEEE-USA and Region 3 team that came together to create the workshop resources and deliver the various employment assistance presentations. This was an excellent example of what the IEEE Network can do to provide real benefits to our fellow members. We now have hundreds of Region 3 members that are better equipped to manage their own careers and provide support to their fellow members. We need to continue the outreach to our members and ensure that everyone has access to our Career / Employment resources. I've attached my earlier October 3 Report that has important links that need to be shared. In addition, the workshop presentations have been uploaded to the Region 3 Online Community at, https://region3.oc.ieee.org/region-3-employment-project This web site will require your IEEE Username / Password for access and downloading of the materials. We did video tape the presentations that were delivered in the Florida workshop. Shortly, these videos will be made available for personal viewing via the web and DVD. Now we need to support the team of Employment Coordinators that the Sections have been building. My plan is to communicate regularly with this Section based team and ensure that they continue to be aware of new resources and have the support that they need for their local members. Please let me know who is your Section Employment Coordinator so I can build an accurate support list. Bill Harrison ( w.harrison@ieee.org ) has been leading our Industrial Relations effort to connect companies with Region 3. Two companies (Oracle & NERC) with opportunities were shared during the workshops. Oracle Go to irecruitment.oracle.com Keyword IRC1354897 or IRC1354896 or IRC1353936 NERC (Atlanta) www.nerc.net donna.zimet@nerc.com Let Bill and I know if you know of companies with additional opportunities. We want to make sure that they know IEEE Members stand above the crowd with respect to skills, experience and leadership ability. The IEEE Jobsite has a new dedicated Region 3 resource, (Cathy Flynn). We will be working with Cathy to help her expand her Southeast company connections. Finally, this project is not one where we create a web site, a brochure, give a presentation and declare victory. Career Management is an effort that will continue for all of us over a 40 year career. By providing training, ongoing motivation / support and integrating real time knowledge of employment opportunities, we can help our members through troubled times and maximize their career goals. Sincerely, Lee Stogner, PMP Director, Region 3 Member, IEEE Smart Grid Initiative Member, IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee Member, IEEE Marketing and Sales Committee Mobile 864-360-9415 Email l.stogner@ieee.org
