IEEE Region 3 Area 6 Report Ron Ogan rtogan@ieee.org 20 January 2011 Mississippi IEEE Section DMC Power provided the first Section meeting presentation on 20 Jan,2011 highlighting high reliability connectors for the power industry. Chip Long, DMC explained super alloy connections that are weatherproof and easier to install. The Electrical Power industry is very important to Mississippi since power equipment exports for the state exceed $ 650 million per year. The 2011 Section officers are Catherine Anderson, Chair, Joel Harris, Vice Chair, Samrat Datta, Secretary and Joe Savage, treasurer. Working as program and awards chair, the following spring presentations are scheduled: February 17 7pm Mississippi Public Broadcasting tour March 15 7pm or March 24 7pm due to St. Patrick's Day – Raymond James April 12 7pm or April 22 due to US Tax filing day. Robotics According to Lee Stogner, Jane Moorhead was trained during the Atlanta, GA R3 meeting and may be available to conduct a career workshop for unemployed members. Other workers at Raytheon, Northrop, Boeing and Lockheed were temporarily or permanently displaced due to federal budget cutbacks. The 2011 Section officers are Bob Robinson Chair, Roger Bolton, Vice Chair, and Tommy McGuire, treasurer /secretary. The University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) and Alabama A&M have active student IEEE chapters who participate in the annual robotics contest. The IEEE Section has 6 societies: Aerospace & Electronic Systems, Computer, Controls System, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Joint Antenna & Propagation/ Microwave Technology & Techniques (JCAM) and Technical Management Council. The Section has an active GOLD chapter lead by John Grimm. I have tried to contact the Montgomery sub-section officers without success. ********** alert ****** The IEEE Mobile, AL Section still needs support due to the 20 % unemployment rate and non-paticipation at Section meetings for Lower Alabama area and the Lower Mississippi member who are not engaged.
