Region 3 Strategic Planning Committee Report to Excom 24 January 2011 The last meeting of the SPC was held in Atlanta on 1 October 2010. There were no changes to the draft minutes circulated after that meeting. The History Subcommittee, led by Charles Hickman, has updated and expanded the Region 3 History, now 67 pages. https://ewh.ieee.org/reg/3/history/IEEE_Region_3_History.pdf The project on Archive Management/Knowledge Capture has been taken over by Eric Ackerman from Charles Lord. David Bower's files of photographs are voluminous and need to be electronically tagged/identified for future retrieval. The 2001 draft of the Region 3 SoutheastCon manual is due for an update. Director-Elect David Green has identified several areas to improve: the conference plan and timeline should go out five years; budgets as submitted should have a 20 percent surplus, in accordance with IEEE policy. "Lessons learned" should be added to the manual as well as the skill sets needed to plan and run conferences. D-E Green has asked that comments and suggestions for improving the manual be forwarded to him. The Conference Committee will collaborate with the SPC in making the update, starting at the Spring 2011 SPC meeting. Director Stogner has identified the need for a Director's Manual, to include timelines, lessons learned and best practices. It would serve as a handbook to aid directors. One problem is the delay in getting updates submitted and posted for the Geographic Roster. Since the email addresses posted there are used in emails from the director to all officers in the 41 sections in the region, there needs to be a way to list all four officers for each section, automatically, from SAMIEEE. Another problem is that the effective date of officer reports is no longer shown on the Georoster. Past-Director Ratcliff, who now serves on the Member and Geographic Activities Strategic Direction Committee, reports that the goal of MGA is to make IEEE a home for technical professionals. But there are many IEEEs now, and a goal is to simplify the perception through a compelling vision to attract other members as well as to serve existing members. One size does not fit all. Changes should not destroy member interest. The North Carolina Council was scheduled to meet on 22 January to consider adoption of revised Council Bylaws. The next meeting of the Region 3 SPC will be held in Nashville, on 18 March, during SoutheastCon 2011.
