Re: Savannah Section IEEE, Report for August 2011 Region 3 Meeting There are no Issues requiring action by the Region 3 Committee or ExCom at this time. Member Engagement Activities: The Savannah Section enjoyed a tour of EFACEC's new production facility in Rincon, GA. Built to serve the needs of its North American customers, the power transformer plant represents one of the largest industrial investments ever made by a Portuguese company in the USA. The turnout of Life members and Student Branch members was particularly encouraging. Section Activities: We also recently participated in the 2001 Savannah Engineering Academy and hosted a luncheon with award and science fair project presentations. Electrical and computer engineering principals and examples were discussed with top local students considering a career in the engineering profession. Disciplines included bioengineering, communications, computers, control systems, electromagnetics, electronics, optics, power, semiconductors, and signal processing. Barriers: Although we have a core group of members that keep the Section running, and local members engaged, it has become difficult to find new volunteers for section leadership. Existing volunteers are finding it difficult to provide the time and energy needed to manage the Section and coordinate meetings. Additional training and/or resources at the Section level is apparently needed. I look forward to seeing everyone at Sections Congress 2011!
