To: Region 3 Committee Fr: Lee Stogner, IEEE Past Director, Region 3 Cc: Region 3 ExCom Sb: Past Director’s report to Region 3 Committee Dt: 18 March 2012 My 2010 - 2011 Region 3 Directorship ended this past December 31. I want to thank everyone for their support over the past two years. During those years, Region 3 went through the peak of the Recession. Many of our fellow members were laid off. Too many are still unemployed and are still faced with how to manage a career change that was not on their schedule. As a response, we launched a two year effort to train volunteers in every Region 3 Section to become part of the Region 3 Employment Assistance Team. We also organized online resources and conducted a series of person to person workshops and web casts to ensure that every Region 3 member had access to our support network. We are not out of the full Recession by any means. In 2012, Ed Kirchner leads our career and employment assistance efforts in Region 3. Please let him know if you need help and he will assemble the team (I'm still involved) and we will respond. One activity you can do locally is to establish a Jobs Board. The Section Jobs Board is a volunteer with the time, connections and personality to collect and share job openings within the Section. Please try to find that person. We will train, support and keep that person motivated. One role that I started during my tenure as Region 3 Director was Co-Chair of the 2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference that was held in Greenville, SC on March 4-8. That conference just ended with 646 very senior international registrants. This conference was a forum that brought together the experts from around the world that will be pushing electric transportation from a few thousand vehicles on the road to the millions of vehicles that will be required in just a few years. For more information, please visit our web site at, https://electricvehicle.ieee.org Shortly we will post videos of our Plenary Sessions for you to learn more about clean, efficient and connected transportation systems. But the conference doesn't just stop. With the approval of the IEEE Board of Directors, we are starting the IEEE Electric Vehicle Initiative that will be a multi year effort to organize the world wide electric vehicle resources of the IEEE such that we can help accelerate the change to electrified transportation. As a Past Director, I also wear the hat of Nominations & Appointments. Starting in 2012, we have expanded the team that will be involved in the process. Our goal has been to achieve “diversity of perspective” in the operations of the N&A. We are doing this by, - The GOLD Chair has been added to the committee. - Engaging Area Chairs and Section Chairs directly in the nominations process should aid in increasing the number of nominations. - Review and revise the calendar of events and dependencies for clarity and completeness. - Introduce additional requirements for candidate documentation (biographical information, position statement). - Develop and document a process for handling the Bylaw requirement for “nominations from the floor” by the ExCom. Our expectation is that all of these changes will enable every member of Region 3 to fully participate in the process of selecting our leaders for the future. I have also volunteered to create a Director's Manual for Region 3. My goal in creating this manual is to bring more Project Management concepts into the position to ensure that future Directors will benefit from the Best Practices that were developed by the Directors that came before. Sincerely, Lee Stogner, PMP Past Director, Region 3 Co-Chair IEEE Electric Vehicle Initiative Member, IEEE Public Visibility Committee Chair, IEEE-USA Membership Development Committee 864-360-9415 l.stogner@ieee.org
