IEEE EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA SECTION REPORT - APRIL 6, 2013 MOST FUN ACTIVITY/PROGRAM Our Robotics and Automation Chapter had a presentation by a local group that supports student robotics programs - Wake Robotics. Approximately 120 people participated, including members and their children as well as student participants and their parents. MOST SUCCESSFUL ACTIVITY/PROGRAM YOUR SECTION HAS HAD RECENTLY Over the last year or so, our PES/IAS joint chapter has had excellent participation in technical meetings on Smart Grid and alternative energy topics. Perhaps our most unique recent program was a tour inside a local nuclear power plant. MEMBER ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES: BEYOND MEETINGS Each summer, the section holds a social event. In 2012 approximately 90 members and their families attended a Carolina Mudcats baseball game. We also hold a member recognition dinner each year where new fellows and other award winners are recognized. SECTION ACTIVITIES FOCUSED OUTWARD: Our section supported STEM activities including MathCounts and Science Fair. On the Saturday of Engineers week, our section supported a Tech Day which engaged over 100 students from middle school through high school. Our Engineering in Medicine and Biology Chapter regularly supports "Intellectual Exchange Groups" organized by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The section has also generously supported the travel costs to help get two student branches to SoutheastCon. We are in discussions with the Triangle based Electric Vehicle Challenge organization to see how we can support their program which works with high school based teams to convert cars to electric vehicles. BARRIERS: WHAT BARRIERS DOES YOUR SECTION HAVE IN CARRYING OUT THESE ACTIVITIES? We have insufficient volunteers to get everything done that should be done. A number of our chapters need new volunteers to lead them. Succession planning is a real problem in the section and chapters.
