IEEE Miami Section Report, April 2013 In 2012, the Miami Section held a total of 37 technical, professional, administrative and social meetings. The section has 7 society chapters including; PES. IAS, EMB, C, VT/COM and TM. This is in addition to the PES and IAS student branch chapters at FIU that were created during 2012. We conducted three distinguished lecturer events, supported STEM activities and student programs. We have submitted all our required reporting. In 2013, we have so far hosted more than 15 meetings and we are planning distinguished lectures and tutorial activities through the upcoming period. Most Fun Recent Activity: For the past 12 years, we have been organizing the National Engineers Week Future City Competition. This year, the competition was conducted in January with 20 schools participating. The event attracted over 400 volunteers, engineering professionals, students and community members attending. Awards were given for the top three winners. The top team represented the state at the national finals held in Washington, DC. Most Successful Recent Activity: We had two very successful activities that attracted many participants. The Personalized Nano Medicine lecture given by Professor Sakhrat Khizroev attracted nearly 100 participants. The second successful activity was the Smart Grid Tutorial presented by Mr. John McDonald which attracted nearly 70 participants. Most technical lectures attract around 20-30 participants Member Engagement Activities: The Miami Section has several opportunities for member engagement. STEM activities occur throughout the year, hosted by section in conjunction with the Florida Engineering Society and the chapters of the ASCE and the society of Cuban engineers. One of our most recent events was the Engineering Expo held at FIU in conjunctions the College of Engineering. The event attracted nearly 2000 students from local school. During the day, the students had the chance to visit labs and demos from various engineering disciplines. We have also conducted junior high school teacher training to assist them in conduction the Future City Competition in their schools for a large number of students. Section Activities Focused Outward: We will continue support and work on STEM activities at various levels. We provide judges for school science competitions and some of our members give general interest presentations at local schools. We continue our collaborations with other engineering field’s technical societies. The section will continue support students at local universities. Over the next few months, we have planned several technical activities and a tutorial planned in May 2013. Barriers: Our on-going barrier is identifying and recruiting volunteers. Issues Requiring Action by the Region 3 ExCom or Committee: No issues at this time. Section Website: https://sites.ieee.org/miami Respectfully Submitted; O. A.
