Region 3 WIE Liaison Report for ExCom telecon 1/20/2014 Cathy Freeman c.freeman@ieee.org To: Region 3 ExCom Cc: Region 3 Committee Sb: Region 3 WIE Liaison Report Dt: 17 January 2014 Thank you to David Green for his service to Region 3 and IEEE. I enjoyed working with you and the Executive Committee and attending my first SouthEast Con in Jacksonville in 2013. I look forward to working with Mary Ellen Randall and the Region 3 ExCom and WIE ExCom in 2014. Activities Update: 17 January 2014: Attended first WIE ExCom telecon. Nita Patel is the 2014 chair and Keyana Tennant is the IEEE Program Manager. Of interest to Region 3 ExCom and members: An IEEE sticker is on the fridge in an episode of 'Big Bang Theory'. Requests by groups for special funding from WIE of up to $300 should be submitted 3 months prior to need. They approved the Atlanta WIE group's request for support for their Ivy Prep middle school outreach. The first IEEE WIE International Leadership Conference will be held May 1-3, 2014 in San Francisco. Registration will launch Monday, 1/20 at the conference website: ieee-wie-ilc.org. May 4-5, 2014 is the WIE ExCom in person meeting, also in San Francisco. All Region and Society Liaisons are invited to attend at their sponsoring org's expense. IEEE WIE will celebrate their 20 year anniversary at Sections Congress in Amsterdam with a special event. Affinity groups are encouraged to submit photos of their activities to be included in a slide show to be played at the event. The next telecon is February 28, 2014 at 10:30 am. The February meeting will be training on WIE and its mission and structure. From WIE: Nominate inspiring WIE members and outstanding Affinity Groups for a 2014 IEEE Women in Engineering award! The IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) awards and recognition program is designed to recognize WIE members and Affinity Groups who have made an outstanding contribution to WIE, within their community, and in the engineering community through their dedication and involvement in projects or activities directed toward fulfilling the WIE mission of inspiring, engaging and advancing women in technology. IEEE Women in Engineering Inspiring Member of the Year Award IEEE Women in Engineering Inspiring Student Member of the Year Award IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of the Year Award IEEE Women in Engineering Student Branch Affinity Group of the Year Award The nomination deadline for all awards is 1 April. 2013 Recap: Globecom 2013 Several Atlanta Section volunteers and I staffed a joint ATL/WIE booth at the Globecom 2013 conference. We had WIE and IEEE giveaways and membership information to hand out. Several attendees were interested in forming WIE affinity groups in their local sections, and several were interested in STEM outreach ideas and activities. We used the SIgnUp Genius website to coordinate volunteer schedules. The Northwest FL Affinity Group will be deactivated due to lack of activity. I contacted the Section Chair and all the listed WIE members there. Some new groups were formed this year: Memphis geocode WE30733, many thanks and best wishes to Divya Chodhry and Yuri Quintana A new student branch at Alabama A&M University in the Huntsville Section was approved. Vtools shows 8 meetings, 5 by the Atlanta WIE and 3 by the Charlotte WIE. Obviously more meetings are happening, but they are not being reported on vtools. Can we improve this situation? Several STEM outreach volunteer opportunities have been announced. February 16-22 is Engineers Week. Check out the DiscoverE.org website for ideas on how you can particpate and to order your FREE volunteer kit. They also have an excellent, short set of slides for training volunteers on how best to relate the message of engineering. https://www.discovere.org/volunteers-educators/volunteer/leading- kids-through-a-successful-engineering-experience The WIE online live chats have been very successful and they aer planning to offer many more in 2014. I have tried to collect all the contact information for WIE groups in Region 3. This list below is what I found, but I could use the help of all Region 3 members and officers to fill in the missing information. Please share my contact information with your WIE Affinity Group officers and encourage them to contact me and update their officer info in the IEEE roster information. Help me help you.
