Region 3 Awards | Hardware | Pre-College | Software | Student Papers | T-Shirt | Web Sites | Participating Schools
Dear IEEE Region 3 Student Branch Counselors and IEEE Student
Leaders:
Thank you all for a terrific Southeastcon 2004 this past weekend in Greensboro,
North Carolina. In particular, I think we all owe our hosts (North Carolina A&T
State University, Guilford Technical Community College, and University of North
Carolina at Greensboro) a big Region 3 "Thank You" for their hard work and
hospitality. Specifically, please join me in thanking Dr. Ibraheem Kateeb and
Dr. John C. Kelly, the two student conference co-chairs.
According to Mark Stokes, we had well over 300 students register plus over 30
branch counselors from 42 separate schools--some of them making their first
appearance at an IEEE Southeastcon at least in my memory. I am truly astonished
at the level of student participation and think that we all owe a great deal of
thanks to your local professional sections for helping to fund travel and
hardware. Chip Dawson and Bill Hennen are also to be named honorary friends of
student activities for their hard work on our behalf before, during and after
the event. If your local section did support your travel or hardware entrant, I
urge you to attend the next section meeting and thank the professionals in
attendance as well as give them a summary of your experiences in Greensboro.
Also, if you have any "cool pix" from Southeastcon that you want to share,
please send them to Lonnie H Baxley, Jr. at
lhbaxley@ieee.org .
Also, we should all thank our sponsors who donated prize money for the paper and
hardware contests: the IEEE Life Members Fund and Mirelle White of the IEEE
Financial Advantage Program.
Next year, as you know, we will be in Fort Lauderdale, Florida April 8-10th and
Eric Ackerman has some wonderful things planned for us. The student competitions
will be hosted by Nova Southeastern University. I am very much looking forward
to the continuation of a Pre-College program that debuted this year under Dr.
Numan Dogan.

From: The 2004 Hardware Design Team The Guilford Tech Robotics and University of North Carolina at Greensboro Hardware Design Team would like to formally thank all of the 2004 competition entrants. Though there were a few bumps along the road, the competition was a success. This was, in part, thanks to the dedication and professionalism of all of you. We saw many, many wonderful designs and were all pleasantly surprised by the creativity and drive of every team in confronting such a complex challenge. With so many deserving teams, we genuinely regret that there were but three awards to give. It is hoped that each individual who took part in this event comes away with hard-earned knowledge that will benefit him or her in years to come. For whether you hold a prize or not, that is your true reward. We also would like to thank University of North Florida and University of Tennessee for their sportsmanship through out the entire competition. As you see in the final standing, the difference is just less than two seconds in completing the run which could be an error of the judges or their equipments. It is also hoped that future hosts will find creative and original ways of challenging participants as we tried to do. It is our deepest-held belief that engineering is about designing for the uncertain, solving new and unique challenges, and cutting a path where none exists. To do otherwise is meaningless. This competition is a way of expressing that and, in the best tradition; you have all demonstrated your ability to meet that challenge with grace and precision. You are, truly, all engineers. Sincerely yours,
John Boyles
