Section Chair’s Report for 2003, IEEE Central Texas Section

By many standards, the Central Texas Section accomplished lots of important activities during 2003.  I will do my best to describe them below:

 

REGION ACTIVITY

-         Joe Redfield served as R5 Membership Chair, and gave several membership and SAMIEEE presentations to the Section.

-         Scott Atkinson attended R5 meeting in El Paso

 

SECTION ACTIVITIY

-         Senior Upgrade Events

o       Spring Austin Senior Member Upgrade Event

o       Fall San Antonio Senior Member Upgrade Event

o       Results: Number of upgrades highest for any section in the IEEE (2nd year in a row)

-         Key Meetings

o       Spring Planning Meeting, for CTS ExCom and guests

o       Distinguished Speaker:  Dr. Vijay Bhargava

o       Fall Planning Meeting, for CTS ExCom and guests

o       Held an ExCom Summer Leadership Workshop at Marriott Hotel San Antonio

o       Co-Sponsored CTS-University of Texas Engineering Management Workshop

o       First official Globalization & Technology Forum sponsored solely by CTS with Speaker support from IEEE-USA.

-         Placed Emily Sopensky as IEEE-USA Fellow to work in Washington, D. C.

-         Represented at Region 5 Conference by John Purvis, Vice Chair, and Paul Kaschube, Student Liaison Coordinator

-         Held Past Chairs Luncheon: Three past chairs and some current officers met for presenting an award to the immediate Past Chair Joe Redfield and to discuss the future holding of past chair meetings.

-         A sponsor of the San Antonio Council for the Cooperation of Engineering and Scientific Societies (SACCESS) bus tour of Technology Firsts of San Antonio (IEEE represented by Joe Redfield); also ongoing sponsor as well.

-         Two participated in PACE Conference in Seattle, WA

-         One participated in the Career Development Workshop, Seattle, WA

-         Support of Student Branches at UT Austin, UT San Antonio, St. Mary’s, Trinity; rewrote the procedures for funding branches at $10,000 per year.  New Student Liaison Coordinator, Paul Kaschube, visited all 4 student branches.  He met student branch officers and their advisors to establish better liaison between the Section and the Students.

-         Approved the new Women In Engineering Affinity Group

-         Worked with new group to organize the Product Safety Society and establish a new Chapter (eff 1/1/2004)

-         Developed new Section Web Pages

-         Rewrote the Section Bylaws and coordinated their approval.

-         Coordinated with Region on an upcoming Region 5 Conference to be held in San Antonio.

-         Supported work of EM Chapter to bring IEMC 2007 to Austin, TX

-         Garrett Polhamus represented Section for the upcoming 2004 E-Week activities in San Antonio; John Purvis represented Section at E-Week activities in Austin.

-         2004 Officers attended Bill Whipkey’s New Officers Workshop held at UT Austin Engineering Building and hosted by the UT Student Branch.
