TEACHERS IN-SERVICE PROGRAM
                          Volunteers Needed

To enhance the level of technology literacy of pre college educators,
IEEE Educational Activities Board and IEEE-USA are sponsoring a
program to establish engineer/educator partnership to promote applied
inquiry-based learning. For the first two years 2001-03, the IEEE
foundation, life member council, Pre College Education committee and
others fund the program. After that the sections will conduct the
program on their own funding sources. Currently one section from each
6 regions within USA and two sections outside USA have been selected
to run the pilot program. San Diego section has been selected for
region 6. The project requires to establish communications with
educators through school districts, teacher organizations etc and
conduct workshops which may be from few hours to a full day in
evenings or week ends to provide knowledge to educators and teachers
on topics of interest which they can then use in the class rooms to
improve the technological literacy. The topics may use engineering
design tools but must satisfy the standards set for Math and Science
education by each state within the region.

San Diego section invites you as an IEEE member to participate in this
project as a volunteer. Basic tasks are to contact educators, select
topics of interest, prepare notes and presentation material and
conduct the workshop.

The expected outcomes of this project to list a few are
- The participants will acquire additional knowledge and material
necessary to enhance their science, math and technology curricula.
- Teachers will have a greater understanding of technical careers,
including engineering, which they can impart to their students
- Engineers and educators will be able to meet and learn from each
other.
- The general level of technological literacy of the students
taught by the participants will be enhanced.

San Diego section will help other sections in region 6 in selection
and preparation of topics and conducting such workshops in their
school districts.
