IEEE Canada Board Member Biographies
The operation of the IEEE Canada is managed by a Board of Directors
whose members are elected or appointed every two years. On each of these
pages, we introduce a member of the committee who volunteers his or her
time and energy to deliver the services that IEEE Canada provides.
On your behalf, we recognize their invaluable contributions.
Lawrence Whitby - Area Chair, Canada Area West
Lawrence Whitby has worked in various capacities with small
firms. He worked in the pipeline industry doing research and development work on
various items including a smart pipeline pig, a downhole tool assembly, and
other work related to the pipeline and oil and gas industries.
Whitby's main experience has been while working for DeVry in
Calgary. He has taught in various programs and he has been Chair of two
programs, notably the Electronics Technician program and the Electronics
Engineering Technology program. Whitby led the revamping of the electronics lab
with the installation of new equipment and the installation of a computer
network in the early 1990's. He taught for one semester at the DeVry Fremont, CA
campus in 1998/99. In 2003, he was selected as the Calgary campus leader in the
development and implementation of an Enterprise Resource Plan with DeVry Inc.
This project involved working with DeVry Inc. and the Calgary campus. His
leadership uncovered software functionalities during the development phase that
led to the eventual successful implementation on the Calgary campus. He has held
various leadership positions within DeVry and with various volunteer
organizations.
