This was a great conference in a lovely location
We had a very
successful conference. 570 papers were scheduled for presentation over
three days - sixty oral sessions and one poster session. After a
wet start on Sunday, the sun came out, the view outside was beautiful
and the atmosphere inside was electric. All three Sunday
workshops were well attended and appreciated. The following is a
brief update - initial portions live from the conference hotel using the
wired and wireless Internet access service available to delegates in the
Oakes Foyer.

Day-By-Day Conference Report
Monday A superb opening plenary session presentation was given by
Dr. Tom Brzustowski, President of Science and Engineering Research
Canada (also known as NSERC) was entitled "Science and Engineering
Research in the next 25 years - some general features", and received an
enthusiastic response. The morning and afternoon technical
sessions were well attended - some to standing room only. The
evening Awards Banquet was attended by 400 guests and featured a
delicious 5-course dinner (surf and turf), followed by a keynote
presentation by 2002 IEEE President Ray Findlay on the Sunday DeCew
Falls milestone dedication and related historical details - accompanied
by photographs of the beautiful local scenery. This was followed
by presentation of 11 awards, including three special awards. A
recognition to Isabel Deslauriers for web page translation, one to Dr. Guy
Olivier for the previous conference, and an exemplary section award to
the IEEE Ottawa Section. Eight annual awards were presented by the
IEEE Canada Awards Committee. More details on the IEEE Canada awards
will be posted on the IEEE Canada web site.
Tuesday The Tuesday plenary session started a new tradition whereby the
winner of the McNaughton Medal, presented the previous evening, gave the
McNaughton Lecture. Dr. Renato G. Bosisio, whose award citation reads
"for research and teaching of microwaves and innovation of six-port based
digital receivers" enthralled his audience with a presentation that traced
the progress of his research career and offered some thoughtful reflections
on the roles of Universities, Research Transfer Centers, and Industries in
encouraging and facilitating research and the development of wealth as it
pertained to microwave engineering research - but with obvious extensions
to many other technical areas. Terry Peach, Manager of Organization
and Staffing at GE Canada, spoke on the topic "Imagine, Solve, Built, Lead -
technological innovation for the 21st century" at the Student Awards Luncheon
where winning authors of the CCECE04 Student Paper competition were announced
and awarded certificates of recognition.
Wednesday The oral and poster sessions were well attended with an
overflow crowd at the luncheon.
Thank you This year's conference organizing committee wishes to
thank the record number of authors who submitted and presented such a
high quality set of technical papers, workshops, plenary sessions,
luncheon presentations, and contributed to the high level of interest
sustained from the opening reception on Sunday to the last sessions on
Wednesday afternoon. Finally, we wish Roy Billinton and his
organizing committee all the best for next year's conference in Saskatoon.
