Help Using the IEEE Canada Digital Library

    Hardware Required
  • A computer with a sound card, speakers, and an internet connection that is adequate for downloading the files (a high speed connection is highly desireable otherwise any audio, movie, PDF or PPT files will take a very long time to download).
  • The file sizes in kb are listed so you can decide if you wish to download prior to viewing or presenting the material.
    Software Required
  • To listen to the audio portion, you need to have a RealOne player installed. A free version can be downloaded from their web site.
  • To view/listen to the movie clips (in a few cases), you need to have the same RealOne player installed as noted above.
  • To view the HTML format of the presentation, nothing more is required.
  • To view the PDF format of the presentation, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. A free version can be downloaded from their web site.
  • To view the PPT format of the presentation, you need to have PowerPoint installed.
    Starting and Synchronizing
Almost all library items have audio clips (a few have movie clips), some have the original presentation graphics in one relatively large PDF file, others have a set of HTML files (each of which loads realtively quickly), some have both. A few have PowerPoint files.
  • To experience the presentation in HTML format, click on the "Start Audio" link. As soon as the sound begins, click on the "Start HTML" link. Use the "Next Slide" button in the display to advance the slides as the talk progresses.
  • To experience the presentation in PDF format, click on the "Start Audio" link, then click on the "Start PDF" link. If the PDF download time is too long to be able to synchronize, you can either use the stop and start button on the RealPlayer window or download the PDF file by right clicking on the link before starting the audio. Use the "Next Slide" button in the Adobe Reader window to advance the slides as the talk progresses.
  • To experience the presentation in PPT format, click on the "Start Audio" link, then click on the "Start PPT" link. If the PPT download time is too long to be able to synchronize, you can either use the stop and start button on the RealPlayer window or download the PPT file by right clicking on the link before starting the audio. Use the "Page Down" key to advance the slides as the talk progresses.
    Problems
  • If the sound or movie clip will not run, you may have an incompatible version of the player (try downloading from the site linked above), or the site/connecting network my be down (try again later)
  • If the PDF file can not be viewed, you may have an incompatible version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (try downloading from the site linked above)
  • If the PPT file can not be viewed, you may not have PowerPoint installed, or you may have an incompatible version.
