IEEE Vancouver Section GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Hello. My name is Jin Malm and I am the IEEE Vancouver GOLD Chair. The IEEE GOLD aims to satisfy the interest of a young professional who are finally discovering that there is life after engineering school! We organize events that may be of interest to someone who is building a career and a financial portfolio. The main events that are of interest to most GOLD members are recruitment events, company tours, and social networking events. The two additional events that are somewhat popular are (1) financial seminars (i.e. what do to with the sudden increase in cash flow) and (2) carreer-building related topics (i.e. challenges in project management and how to decide if you are ready for a career in management). If you are interested in attending or organizing any of the above events, please contact me at .The IEEE Vancouver GOLD can't operate without feedback or volunteers!

The Pros and
Cons of Hydrogen Visions Date: Thursday October 12, 2006 (5:00pm) Location: UBC CEME 1202 (contact ) OR Date: Friday October 13, 2006 (5:00pm) Location: Centre Room of BC Hydro Edmonds Auditorium, 6911 Southpoint Drive, Burnaby (contact ) Abstract Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier that has attracted much interest from public and private investors recently. But questions about its feasibility in widespread use abound. How can we generate the hydrogen? Are fuel cells getting cheap enough for mass production? Will the parasitic losses along the hydrogen production chain render it uncompetitive? What are the transistion plans and which transistion paths towards a hydrogen era make sense? This seminar will expose attendees to questions and issues regarding potential transistions towards a hydrogen economy. The seminar’s goal is to educate and inform energy users about the potential impact of hydrogen technologies and visions. Biography: Clinton Andrews approaches policy questions from the bottom-up perspectives of engineering and planning. His recent academic work focuses on problems involving multi-party decision making and regulatory policy. This includes the modeling and analysis of regional electric power systems and other energy and environmental policy topics. He is co-editor of a forthcoming special issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE on the hydrogen economy. Dr. Andrews has degrees in engineering and planning from Brown and MIT. His non-academic background includes engineering design and project management in the private sector and technology assessments for government. Previously, he was on the Princeton faculty, where he helped launch a program in Science, Technology, and Public Policy. He now directs the Planning program at Rutgers. He is a licensed professional engineer, and was awarded the IEEE Third Millenium Medal in 2000. He is a past president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology and he currently sits on the Board of Directors of IEEE. Other Info: If you plan to attend, contact Jin Malm (). Showcase and Seminar Dr.
Victor C.M. Leung, UBC Date: Friday May 26, 2005 (5:00pm) Location: Nokia, 9200 Glenlyon Parkway, Burnaby, BC Cost:
Free for IEEE members and $2 for non-members. The transmission control protocol (TCP) is one of the key protocols that allows computers and communication devices connected to the global Internet to exchange data reliably, even though the underlying network services may be unreliable. However, TCP was designed to deal mainly with unreliable packet delivery caused by network congestion. When it is applied over wireless networks, unintended performance degradation results. This presentation will examine the causes of these degradations, and review some of the existing methods to overcome these degradations. Biography: http://www.ece.ubc.ca/~vleung/biography.html Other Info: The seminar will be followed by demos of packet data services over UMTS cellular network. Registration is required. If you plan to attend, contact Jin Malm () by May 20th. Please provide your name, company, e-mail address, and your IEEE member status. To find out about upcoming events sooner, sign up on the IEEE GOLD maillist by contacting Jin as above. Online
